AN extra £1 million is to be spent on the long-awaited Stanground bypass so it will be able to cope with future development in the area.
As work is already progressing well on the multi-million pound relief road, the city council has used emergency powers to rush though the payment to Persimmon Homes, the company behind the project.

The housebuilding company was controversially granted planning permission for a development of 1,500 homes in Stanground on condition that it pays for and builds the bypass, and work started last year.

But with massive developments such as the Magna Park warehouse and freight terminal planned for the area, which will create thousands of jobs, the council has decided to release funding to Persimmon Homes – up to £1 million – to pay for essential, additional structural works on the road.

If the structural improvements were not carried out now, it was felt that it would only lead to increased maintenance costs and disruption in the near future, and the costs would be borne by the council anyway.

Deputy chief executive Ben Ticehurst, pressing for the agreement with Persimmon Homes to be authorised to support the future growth of the city, said: “The additional works are required to facilitate future growth in the sub-region and it is expedient to secure the best value by securing the current developer to complete the additional work at the present time.

“This will ensure that economies will be gained from the contractors who are already on site.

“Due to the progress of the works it is critical that the agreement is entered into without delay to ensure that the developer and the council secures the best price for the additional works.

“Failure to secure the contract for the additional works at the present time would lead to the loss of opportunity to invest in highway improvements at the best possible price.”

Is this why they stopped working for 2 months and built a fence around the site to stop us from seeing it?

They've got to spend their remaining money quick before the end of the tax year. If they dont spend it, what they get from the government will be lower next year.

But I thought that Persimmon were paying for single lane bypass, and the new warehouse/freight terminal site were paying to dual it.
I take it the £1m will be repaid to the council purse once the terminal has been pushed through...

Wayneshill is spot on.

Opportunity Peterborough want the Magna Park Development and the low skilled, low paid jobs promised because its easier than trying to attract skilled manufacturing companies into the city and of course will come with a huge planning bounty to boost the councils coffers. Gazeley have said that without the bypass Magna Park is a non starter so its obvious what is going on here.

Welcome to 'Warehouse City' more coming to a field near you soon.

Why not just pave over the entire country - what's left to be paved over - and have done with it?

Anything that stops the many speeding idiots using Oakdale Avenue as a rat run to try and beat the traffic on Whittlesy Road in the morning, is a good thing. It's a 20mph limit for part of it, gives us a chance to get out of our own drives without the fear of side impact, and dont bother with the dirty looks either as I dare to stay within the limit.

Nice to see the ET support the concreting over of such a huge part of the south of Peterborough with its welcome for the strengthening of the bypass for LGV's which everyone knows is only being suplemented using tax payers money (or maybe even the developers via an underhand agreement)so as to ease the way for Gazeleys Magna Park Development. With the majority of local councillors and many residents opposing it one wonders just how much more misinformed and out of touch the ET can be.

This is an absolute disgrace, they are making a complete mess of these once green fields, it brings tears to my eyes, all the wildlife has done a runner, the once old nene is going to be ruined, more lorries more co2 so much for the environmental capital
