THE specially-erected marquee, which remained almost empty on election night cost city taxpayers almost £5,000.
It was set up at the front of the town hall, in Bridge Street, complete with wide-screen televisions to allow everyone who wanted to be part of the proceedings to do so.

It also kept the main corridors free for health and safety reasons. But compared to last year, large crowds didn’t emerge.

Council leader John Peach said the marquee was put up on police advice.

Speaking at a full council meeting, he said: “It was an overflow facility and for shelter. It cost £4,743.50.

“Perhaps there was less interest in the elections.”
