A COUNCILLOR has today called for the closure of a popular Peterborough car boot sale to stop environmental damage at the site.
Cars churning up the grass verges, cracked pavements and noise are just some of the reason why Cllr Stephen Goldspink believes the car boot at The Wirrina, in Bishop's Road, should be scrapped.

The East Ward councillor says that the "few thousand pounds" brought in each year by the sales, which have run every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday for the past few years, is outweighed by the cost to the environment and the quality of life for neighbouring residents.

However, car boot organiser Tony D'Alessio, who has run the sales for three years, said the concerns have come as a complete surprise to him.

Should the car boot sale stay?

-------------------------------------

Cllr Goldspink was first told about the problem when he was out and about last April knocking on people's doors to drum up votes for the election.

He said: "One or two of the elderly residents at Stephenson Court were saying there's a lot of noise, with door's slamming and people shouting.

"They were also saying that people were parking their cars on the grass verges and pavements, causing damage to both. I managed to get a bit of fencing up to deter people, but then they went up on the other side.

"I was out on a Sunday morning recently and I was horrified. The cars were all over the verges, pavements and paths, completely oblivious to the legality of it.

"It has to be seen to be believed. Shortly after that, I had more complaints again."

Now, the councillor has taken his battle to new heights and written to the council's head of property services, Andrew Edwards, calling for an immediate halt to car boot sales on the site.

He added: "Any income that we are making in the one hand will be lost by maintenance expenditure in the other and we had to pay to install a barrier.

"The only way to relieve my residents of this blight is to cease it completely and I won't rest until that happens."

Mr D'Alessio, who says the car boot sales at The Wirrina have been running on and off for the past 20 years, didn't want to comment on the situation until he knows more.

He said: "I'm not aware of anything whatsoever and while I don't know anything then I don't want to comment on it. It comes as a surprise to me."

A spokesperson confirmed that they have received the letter from Cllr Goldspink in regard to the car boot sale and said the his concerns will be raised with the Mr D'Alessio.

Oh NO ! Huge environmental damage!! A couple of elderly people half a mile away complain of car doors shutting !! Lets close it down !! Its only been running for 20 years and hundreds of people use it, stuff the majority, lets close it for the minority as usual and just because some grass has been churned up. Oh well, it will be another open space for the "Travellers" to move onto, no more problems then, peace and quiet, no dogs, no mess, no burnt out cars, perfect !

During a time of economic turmoil closing down a car boot sale is pure insanity. It's been proved up and down the country that these types of sales are flourishing at the moment - how out of touch can the council be?
Where else would anybody consider closing something that is successful? I'm sure one or two residents can put up with something that thousands enjoy and benefit from.

What about moving the travellers on from Vicarage Farm Rd where they have been camping for months now. Typical Cllr's heavy handed over reaction to get his name in the paper again and try to justify his position. It is easier to target such an issue rather than deal with real issues that are affecting his ward.

It would seem that Cllr Goldspink does not like the idea of free enterprise. The only time a councillor listens to the public is when there is a local election. As far as i am aware, the grass verge is not even Mr D'Alessio's responsibility. Its a case of victimize the little man.
Cllr Goldspink calls it a blight and that he wont rest until he stops the car boot.
what a miserable jobsworth

Don't know of many decent Cities that have such an event on a weekly basis so close to the centre. Surely these places just encourage the handling and sale of stolen goods, and attract the wrong kind of people. Peterborough is trashy enough without this sale of junk.

Not only should the car boot stay open, the Wirrina eyesore should be knocked down to make room for more pitches. Cllr Goldspink is a prefect example of the reason many young people are disillusioned by politics. He is totally out of touch and should resign from his position. To actually make a statement that you will not rest until the car boot is closed is very blinkered to the real issues. The credit crunch will drive more and more people to attend car boot sales. We need to manage the traffic not close it down. A knee jerk reaction from an incompetent Cllr!

Yes - the Wirrina is a successful venture - so close it down! What is it with Peterborough ? Why can't we build on success? If there are problems with parking then the answer is the deployment of a traffic warden rather than the closure of an honest man's business.

Getting Real,

The problem has only got worse since the council decided to start making a quick buck by charging on Sundays in the adjoining Carparks, Regional Pool and Bishops Road. Maybe Councillor Goldspink should be contacting Peter Tebb, the council's traffic manager, to put back free parking on Sundays in those areas, the problem would have a good chance to go away on its own. I suspect that would be way too easy a solution for the Council though...
