A RAIL worker is demanding an explanation after he received a parking ticket for leaving his motorbike in the spot he has parked in for the past 19 years.
Ian Muffett (44), from Hampton, travels to Peterborough train station on his scooter every day of the week, and leaves it in what he believed to be a designated shelter behind the taxi booking office.
But this week, when the London rail worker returned to his bike, he found a £30 parking fine waiting for him.
He said: “I know plenty of other motorcyclists would have had the same ticket as me as there was a lot of tickets handed out.
“It just seems greedy, and I’m embarrassed to say I work for a rail company when something like this happens. It’s not as if the bikes are obstructing anyone, they are just parked in a shelter that looks as if it was purpose-built for motorbikes.”
Mr Muffett plans to appeal against the ticket despite a sign being erected at the entrance to the shed stating motorbikes should not be left there.
National Express East Coast spokesman John Gelson said the sign was put up recently, but couldn’t confirm if it went up before or after Mr Muffett received the fine.
And he added: “We are aware that there are capacity constraints for motorcycle parking in the area immediately around Peterborough station. However, alternative parking is available at Mayor’s Walk to the north of the station.
“Signage explaining that motorcycles must be parked in a designated location is displayed around the front of the station. We will review these signs to ensure they are clear.
“In the meantime, if Mr Muffett would contact us we will investigate now that this has been brought to our attention.”
