10.20am UPDATE: RECOVERY experts had to know their onions when a lorry carrying 16 tonnes of the pungent vegetables crashed on to its side.
The articulated Scania truck came to grief on the A47 at Eye yesterday on the roundabout joining the road with the A1073, blocking the entrance to the village.

Heavy recovery specialists Frank Ratcliffe & Son Ltd were called in to deal with the accident, which happened at about 7pm.

The Conington-based firm used two mobile cranes to raise the stricken vehicle and a recovery truck to lower it safely to the ground.

The recovery operation was finished and the road reopened by 10.27pm. No one was hurt in the incident and no other vehicles are thought to have been involved.

Managing director of the company Dan Ratcliffe said no onions had spilled from the solid shipping container towed by the truck and described the recovery as a "straightforward job".

FRIDAY 7.30AM: TRAFFIC was brought to a standstill after a lorry toppled over on the A47 at Eye last night.
The road had to be closed to traffic for some time while the vehicle was recovered.

More in Friday's ET.
