TWO neighbours were beaten unconscious after confronting a group of youths damaging cars in the street.
A 35-year-old man, noticed a group of youths causing damage to a nearby car in Ramsey just after midnight on Saturday. He called out to the group, who then turned their attention to him and his vehicle.

The youths entered the man's garden and began hitting his vehicle. They refused to leave his property so the man confronted them brandishing a baseball bat. However, one of the youths, who was wearing a white tracksuit jacket, punched the man.

Later a larger group of youths returned and the same attacker from the previous incident threw a bicyle at a second neighbour, a 50-year-old man, who was knocked unconscious and assaulted again.

The first man went to his neighbour's aid but was struck on the back of the head and knocked unconscious. When he came round he felt punches and kicks to his chest, back and legs.

Both neighbours received hospital treatment for their injuries but have been discharged.

Detective Constable Julia Coker, who is investigating, said: "This was a despicable crime on two men who were trying to protect their, and their neighbours', property.

Officers believe three incidents of criminal damage in Little Whyte, and The Avenue on the same night are linked to the assaults.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Coker at Huntingdon Police Station on 0845 456 456 4 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Disgraceful. Surely enough is enough. Time for a curfew, an end to alcohol sales to anyone under 25 or total ban on supermarkets etc selling alcohol.

On top of that minimum 10 year sentences for this type of attack with no early release and no more cushy prisons but forced to work.

I hope these scum get set upon by a gang.

the real world... 15/05/2008 14:15:24
Coppers are more interested in catching bird trappers than dealing with violent offenders like these - as is demonstrated by today's feature "The police team protecting our wildlife." Where is the police team protecting the public??

Dan Jackson - yes it is a disgrace, but so are your proposals on the young. Next time someone in their 50s gets done for drink driving, I propose a complete driving ban on all those with crows feet and gout.

Thom why are my proposals so bad? Over 90% of drink and violent incidents like this are caused by youths.

What do you suggest we do, give them another 5 chances before they go to jail and then let them live on benefits and in a council house.

There are a lot of great young people who are law abiding and deserve credit, however, unless we do something you will not stop these types of morons.

Sadly,it is a daily event to read of crimes as despicable as this one and until such times as Magistrates and Judges get tough with the offenders, these acts will continue unabated.
But take heart! Mr Brown and his lot keep on telling us that crime levels are down. Hard to believe when prisons (GBH = Govenment Backed Hotels" are full to overflowing. Time to bring back flogging methinks!

Flogging would be good and much more too. No respect and no punishments mean these people just keep getting away with all they want.

My father-in-law lives on Little Whyte and, sadly, drunken abusive behaviour and criminal damage occurs most weekends in that area. He lives in a 3rd floor flat and regularly sees people walking over cars, breaking wing-mirrors and lights, fighting in the street etc. He used to report this to the police but doesn't bother anymore as nothing is ever done. The trouble all eminates from one or two pubs in the immediate area but there is no permanent police prescence even at weekends. Frankly, these yobs think they own the area on an evening and the police seem incapable or unwilling to deal with the matter.

Of course its disgraceful but in a country where the criminal has more protection than the victim what will happen even if the scumbags get caught? Virtually nothing that's what, maybe a telling off from some magistrate that thinks that exceeding the speed limit by 1mph is a worse crime
