Current form: The Free Kicks Foundation, the charity of which I am founder and trustee, were sponsoring the match. The aim of our charity is to raise money to give sick, bereaved and deserving children days out at football. This was our 20th 'kick' and was going to be a special one!
We were taking the Hornsby family from Crowland along as our guests. Mum Amanda and dad Dave were joined by Declan (17), Sacha (15), Kieran (10) and Keane (3). Keane has suffered from a lot of health issues since birth and his complex additional needs mean that his condition is very demanding on the rest of the family. We invited them along, to so they could all have quality time together as a family.

Kieran and Keane were mascots and the club also kindly allowed us to do a bucket collection outside the ground and in the bars.

Pre-match: I arrived at London Road with my son Ashley at about midday, after dropping off a couple of collection buckets at Ebeneezers, where our friends from PISA were also having a collection for us. First job was to leave some of our leaflets around the ground. By the time I got back to the main stand the Hornsby family had arrived and were excitedly waiting in reception. We were then taken to the sponsors lounge and the boys were sorted out with their new kits. Then it was time to go down to the changing rooms for photo opportunities and autographs. Everybody was very excited at meeting the players and although I have now been down in the dressing rooms a few times it still gives me a buzz.

After a tour of the ground, we had a really nice meal in the sponsors lounge and then Keane and Kieran went for a kick-about on the pitch while the rest of us watched from the stand. After that we all went into the centre circle to have our pictures taken with the match officials and captains.

Half-time: We were all very glad to have a nice warm room with coffee and cakes to go back to at half-time. The first half was poor. I don't remember the Tranmere keeper having a save to make, but Joe Lewis made a fantastic double save to keep the score level.

Full-time: We had to choose the man-of-the-match towards the end of the game and decided on Joe Lewis, although Gaby Zakuani and Shaun Batt, who made a big difference to our attacking play in the second half, pushed him close.

In the end we got away with not playing well and having another chance to go through.

We all had a fantastic day as sponsors, everybody at the club went out of their way to make us welcome and treated us like royalty. We were presented with a signed shirt, with 'Free Kicks' on the back and a picture memento of the day. The last job of the day was to give Joe his well deserved man-of-the-match award.

When I got home we counted the money that had been collected and there was over £250, which was fantastic.

All in all it was an amazing day for the Hornsby family and for the 'Free Kicks Foundation'. Just to see the smiles on all of their faces throughout the day, makes you realise how much these days out mean to the people we are helping!
