FOOTBALL:
Player-power was blamed for the sacking of Posh coach Phil Neal. Chairman Peter Boizot said: "I decided to let Phil go because I thought it might give the players a lift." Instead Posh lost 4-1 at Shrewsbury despite a goal from Martin Carruthers.
FOOTBALL: Malcolm Christie scored twice as Deeping Rangers drew 2-2 with Pearl in the Peterborough Premier Division. Ian Andrews and Mally Priddy scored for Pearl.

RUGBY UNION: Rob Morley was dismissed 30 seconds after arriving as
a second-half substitute for allegedly stamping on an opponent's head. Borough still maintained their unbeaten home record with a 19-6 Courage Championship win over Ilkeston thanks to tries from Andy Ray, John Sismey and Pete Brudnell.

FOOTBALL: Posh reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup by beating Crewe 3-1 in a quarter-final replay at Gresty Road despite losing goalkeeper Dan Connor with a suspected broken leg. Midfielder Matthew Gill played in goal for the final 20 minutes after scoring the opening goal with Matthew Etherington and Matthew Hann netting later on.

POOL: Peterborough players John Roe, Nicky Parnell, Lee Nesbitt, Nigel Olding, John Aucherlonie and Darren Hope halped Cambs win the National Inter-Counties title for the first time.

20 YEARS AGO

HOCKEY:
Michelle Hall and Rachel Marriott of Saracens were selected for England Under 21 trials. Clubmate Leeane Austin was picked for an England Under 16 trial.

BOXING: Peterborough featherweight Gary De Roux pounded out a gruelling points win over Russell Davison of Stafford in Solihull to keep his British title hopes alive.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town clinched promotion to the inaugural National League Division Two after forcing a 2-2 draw with Fords of Dagenham. Andrew Vartan and Paul Graham scored the Town goals.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates were duffed 17-4 by Solihull and 18-5 by Murrayfield in British Premier League matches. Todd Bidner scored a hat-trick in both games.

FOOTBALL: Mark Leeton scored twice and Ken Inglis added a third as Stamford came from behind to beat Baker Perkins 3-1 in a United Counties Premier Division derby.

CYCLING: Brothers Jeremy and Alex Harrison celebrated road race victories for Peterborough CC. Jeremy won the Northants CRA while Alex took the honours in the Fenland Clarion 37 miler.

FOOTBALL:
Marauders won the Whittlesey Five-a-side League Cup with a 2-1 win over Whittlesey Youth Club. Stephen Bull and John Lepla scored the goals and the rest of the squad was Tony Bull, Tim Gale, Kevin Gale and Kevin Hudson.

BILLIARDS: City ace Markham Wildman went down 2916-2099 to Bob Close in the semi-final of the English Amateur Championships in Middlesbrough.

TABLE TENNIS: Alan Gray of City won the Peterborough League singles title for the first time with a 21-6, 21-6 win over clubmate Colin Dale. Craig Goldsmith (Walton) won the Under 13 boys title with a three-set win over Lloyd Brown (Orton).

FOOTBALL: Former bank clerk Steve Camp scored his first Posh goal to deliver a 1-0 win over Colchester in Division Three at London Road. The win moved Posh up to seventh place.

SQUASH: Eastfield took control at the top of Peterborough League Division One with a 4-1 success over City and Counties. Jim Daintith, Bob Green, Adrian Tanner and Graham Moorhouse won for Eastfield, but Ian Clements was well beaten by Mick Hillson.

ATHLETICS: The Cambs boys team of Kevin Carley (Hinchingbrooke), Tony Jarman (Eastholm), Paul Moyes (Jack Hunt) and Andrew Allen (Kings) were third in the All-England Schools Cross-Country Championships.

40 YEARS AGO
BOXING:
Clive Hogben won a national title when beating Londoner Tim Gorry in a National Association of Boys Clubs Final at Stoke. Hogben won the junior nine stone final on points.

CRICKET: Nenedale celebrated their 21st birthday with an awards bash for loyal club servants at The Windmill pub. Big winners were Con and Elsie Martin, Bob Medhurst, Len Day, Bernard Watson, Vic Wyatt, Joe Davis and Maurice Wynn.

HOCKEY: Town thirds were the only one of five teams from the club to beat opposition from Leicester Westleigh. Dave Currie (2), Malc Unwin (2) and Peter Stimpson scored in a 5-1 win.

FOOTBALL: New boy Graham Ricketts grabbed an equaliser as Posh drew 1-1 at Shrewsbury in Division Three. Ron Cooper and Brian Wright were named as Posh men of the match.

FOOTBALL: Peterborough Boys named a strong side to face Kettering and Corby as they bid to win the Wainwright Schools Cup Challenge for the third time in succession.
