40 YEARS AGO:
POSH: Manager Norman Rigby banned his players from drinking alcohol after Wednesday each week in a bid to improve their performances.
FOOTBALL: FA Sunday Cup holders Drovers continued their defence by moving into the last 16 with a 3-1 win over top-notch Lincoln team Adelaide Park.

Two Barry White goals and a Doug Foard effort did the trick.

HOCKEY: The toss of a coin decided
the Iuvenix Cup semi-final between Old Ortonians and Crusaders.

The latter side made the right call to advance after a 1-1 draw in which Howard McClauchlin had grabbed their goal.

RUGBY: Tom McClure claimed a couple of tries during a polished Peterborough performance in their 19-8 win over Loughborough Town. Jack Deacon and Murdoch McCulloch also crossed the line.

POSH: Jim Hall hit a hat-trick as Posh bashed Bradford 6-1 at London Road.

Roger Wosahlo, Tommy Robson and Bobby Downes also netted in the Fourth Division onslaught watched by 5,416 fans.

FOOTBALL: City teenagers Graham Dudley and Bob Maunders helped Lincolnshire beat Hertfordshire 3-1 in the Midlands Youth Cup.

30 YEARS AGO:
FOOTBALL: Former Posh boss John Barnwell - who quit London Road due to a lack of backing from the board - took over as Wolves manager.

BASKETBALL: City side Focus eased past Keg Nine of Rushden 70-67 in the Northants Winter League KO Cup. Focus scorers: Neil Walker 16pts, Richard Hodgkiss 15, Nigel Robinson 12, Gavin Farrow 4, Ahmed Dastaray 3.

POSH: New manager Billy Hails completed his first signing since taking over in the Posh hotseat. He captured Exeter City attacking midfielder Harry Holman for a nominal fee.

BADMINTON: Geoff Kendall enjoyed a triple success in the Evening Telegraph Under 18 Championship - winning singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.

DARTS: Whittlesey pair Graham Clarke and Alan Bull were £40 richer after winning the Hockley Cup. They beat Ken Cole and Tony Hudson in the final with the duos of Aubrey McCullock/Alan Weston and Doug Hill/John Wilson bowing out in the last four.

FOOTBALL: Coates ended Thomas Cook's unbeaten record in the Peterborough League. Dick Whitwell and Ernie Gale hit the goals in a 2-1 success.

20 YEARS AGO
ICE HOCKEY: Pirates coach Garry Unger called an emergency players' meeting in the wake of a sorry 7-5 defeat at the hands of struggling Solihull. A Todd Bidner hat-trick and Wayne Crawford double couldn't lift the gloom.

FOOTBALL: Wayne Garner used his head to inspire Wisbech to a cracking 2-1 win over Rushden in the Beazer League Midland Division. Garner struck with two headers in the final 14 minutes.

ATHLETICS: Former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ian Thompson romped to victory in the second round of the Frostbite League at Bourne Woods.
