10 YEARS AGO:
ICE HOCKEY: Pirates made it three wins out of three in November's Christmas Cup with a 9-3 romp over Blackburn. Bill Kelleher led the way with five goals and an assist.
FOOTBALL: Veteran Renzo Bizzotto (39) struck a hat-trick as Peter Pan smashed Hand & Heart 8-0 in the Hereward Cup. Captain Paul Gauntlett also hit three with Simon Acton and Matt Leftley completing the scoring.
HOCKEY: Paul Tancred hit six goals as Tornadoes swept to a 9-0 win over Harborne in the National Mixed Cup. Gary Hales (2) and Mark Britton scored the other goals.
FOOTBALL: The pressure eased on Posh boss Barry Fry as his side beat local rivals Cambridge 2-1 in a pulsating derby at London Road. Trevor Benjamin fired Cambridge ahead, but goals from Steve Castle and Leon McKenzie secured the points for Posh in front of a crowd of 10,168.
MARTIAL ARTS: City man Clifton Findley was crowned the undisputed king of the karate world. He beat local favourite Todd James in the WKA Final in Toronto, Canada, to add to the WUMA belt he already held.
FOOTBALL: Former Posh star John Cozens resigned as manager of Stamford after they lost 2-1 at home to Paget in the Dr Martens League. It was a sixth straight loss for the Daniels.
20 YEARS AGO
CRICKET: Young off-spinner Adam Howorth collected Peterborough Town's Player-of-the-Year award. Phil Dicks was clubman of the year.
SNOOKER: John Auchterlonie, Mark Gray, Simon Hicks, Rudolph Chapman, Andrew Bunten and Craig Newson were all selected for the Cambs Under 19 side.
FOOTBALL: Peterborough Boys Under 15s drew 2-2 in a friendly in Nottingham. Graham Morris (Jack Hunt) and Chris Woolard (Eastholm) scored the city side's goals.
RUGBY LEAGUE: Kevin Picton, Graham Teigh, Steve Kilroe, Garry Parker and Mark Whalley all scored tries, but Peterborough still went down 34-24 at Midland Division leaders Chesterfield.
ATHLETICS: Strong runs from Mandy McLees, Teresa Dyer and Teresa O'Kane helped Nene Valley Harriers to the team prize in the Ampthill Trophy Cross-Country event.
FOOTBALL: Pathetic Posh slipped to a 1-0 home defeat by Hartlepool in a game remembered for the substitution of full-back David Langan just minutes after he'd come on as a second-half substitute!
ICE HOCKEY: Pirates lost a 16-goal thriller at home to Fife in the Heineken League. Wayne Crawford grabbed a hat-trick for the city side in the 9-7 defeat.
30 YEARS AGO
FOOTBALL: Over 21,000 saw Brighton reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 1-0 win over Posh. Mark Lawrenson scored the only goal of the game.
BOXING: Dave 'Boy' Green, the Fen Tiger from Chatteris, stopped American Aundra Love in eight rounds at Wembley in a non-title welterweight fight.
FOOTBALL: Posh boss John Barnwell dramatically quit just hours after telling local newspapers he would stay at London Road. Barnwell blamed a lack of support from the board for his decision.
CRICKET: British Rail scored a notable double at the Peterborough League presentation of awards. Gordon Rowell won the batting prize after scoring 302 runs at an average of 30.2 and Bob Feek won the bowling prize after capturing a competition record 97 wickets at 7.02 runs apiece.
RUGBY UNION: Borough beat Lincoln 22-0 in a friendly. Graham Walker claimed two tries and Keith Jensen one with the rest of the points coming from the boot of John Williams.
HOCKEY: Peterborough Town's slack defending cost them dear in the County Club Championships. Max Webb scored the consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat by Cambridge City.
40 YEARS AGO
FOOTBALL: Posh splashed out a club record fee of £20,000 to sign winger Tommy Robson from Northampton.
RUGBY UNION: Peterborough Town delivered a slick performance to beat Lincoln 20-8 in a friendly. Mick Jones scored two tries, while Dave Everitt and Tom McClure also touched down.
FOOTBALL: Drovers beat Thorney 9-2 in the Peterborough Sunday Cup. Barry White (4), Willie Ford (2), Malc Grummitt (2) and Howard Judge scored the goals.
SWIMMING: Brian Brinkley (15) was the only Peterborough swimmer to win an event for Northants in a County meeting also involving Worcestershire and Lincs. Brinkley won the 110-yard butterfly race.
FOOTBALL: Posh drew 3-3 at Darlington in Division Four with goals from Peter Price (2) and Jim Hall. Posh had been 3-1 down.
TABLE TENNIS: The Peterborough League side of Colin Dale, David Obee, Keith Spridgeon, Doug Howell and Evelyn Allinson lost 30-10 to Bedford in a challenge match. FOOTBALL: Brian Hornsby kept Peterborough Boys in the English Schools Shield with an equaliser two minutes from time. Robin Wade supplied the through-ball which gave Hornsby the chance to make it 1-1.
