10 YEARS AGO:
SPEEDWAY: Returning Ronni Pedersen roared back into Panthers action with a bang. He scored 11 points in his first meeting for the club in three years during the second leg of a Young Shield quarter-final success at Newport.
POSH: The London Road club were rocked by the departure of their assistant manager and most lethal weapon as veteran Jimmy Quinn left to take over as Swindon Town manager.

HOCKEY: Town made an electric start to their East Premier Division A title defence. They hammered Cambridge City 4-2 with Gary Hales striking twice.

RUGBY: Tries from prop Mick Royal and centre Pete Brudenell were not enough to prevent a first defeat of the season for Borough, 15-12 against Northampton Old Scouts.

SPEEDWAY: Former Panthers star Craig Hodgson was found dead in Australia after committing suicide. He rode for the city club for four years between 1987 and 1990.

ICE HOCKEY: Pirates squandered a 4-1 lead to start the new season on a low note in Edinburgh. The city side had Graham Waghorn and Ted Salutskij dismissed, and coach Troy Walkington sent from the rink, during a 6-5 defeat.

FOOTBALL: Steve Paling and Tomy Timbrell both struck twice as Oundle crushed Alconbury 6-0 in the Peterborough League Premier Division.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers captain Kevin Hawkins lost his coveted silver helmet to Stoke man Louis Carr after the city side's 50-46 defeat against the Potters. Mick Poole scored paid 16 for the city side.

POSH: Defender Steve Collins made an impressive return to first team action in a goalless draw at Grimsby. The Mariners fielded former Stamford striker and future Posh manager Keith Alexander in their side.

ICE HOCKEY: Kenny McKie and Peter Smith both notched trebles as Pirates overcame Slough 11-9 at the East of England Ice Rink. But it was pint-sized Scot Kevin King who hit the city side's best goal.

FOOTBALL: March smashed St Ives 5-1 in the FA Vase with Steve Bedford (2), Gerald Plumb, Andy Eaves and Clayton Brownlow on target.

HOCKEY: Town were bashed 5-1 by Old Loughtonians in a friendly. Steve Gregory got the city side's goal.

SQUASH: Ian Lawson became Peterborough Town plate champion after beating Zulfikhar Dhanji 3-0 in the final. Trevor Bradshaw beat John Clarke 3-2 in the Over 45s event.
