40 YEARS AGO - 1968:
FOOTBALL: Jim Hall scored for Posh, but mistakes by centre-half John Wile and goalkeeper Tony Millington enabled Chester to leave London Road with a 2-1 win in Division Four.
ANGLING: City men Russell Hole and Tommy Williams finished second and third in the Northants County Championships on the Nene, but helped the Jolly Anglers to win the team prize.

FOOTBALL: Holbeach beat local rivals Spalding 5-2 in an FA Cup repla
y thanks to a Jimmy Stewart hat-trick and one apiece from Barry Smith and Barry Delahoy.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town's four teams all retained their unbeaten record. David Long (2) and John Efford were on target for the firsts in a 3-1 win over Skegness.

FOOTBALL: Mick Vincent scored five times as Polaris opened their Wirrina Fives campaign with a 10-3 win over Saracens Hockey Club. Dave Oxer also scored a hat-trick for Polaris.

ATHLETICS: Bill Yale, Jim Hussey and Ted Butcher won the Eastern Counties Road Race title for Peterborough Athletic Club.

CRICKET: Peterborough Town and Ramsey drew a friendly on the final day of the season. John Meadows top scored with 48 in Ramsey's 169-7 with Dennis Replh making 54 of Town's 135-6.

30 YEARS AGO - 1978

FOOTBALL: Posh made a £100,000 bid for Tranmere Rovers striker Ronnie Moore.

RUGBY UNION: Stamford won the Lincs seven-a-side competition for the first time beating Market Rasen 13-0 in the final. Stamford squad: Bob Short, Mark Walmsley, Pete Gregory, Neil Thomas, Hugh McSloy, Russ Doyle, Phil Harrison, Keith Hurford.

CRICKET: Wicket-keeper Steve Hair was the shock winner of the Brotherhoods single wicket competition, beating Dave Peploe in the semi-final and Andrew Stocks in the final.

SPEEDWAY: Ian Clark announced his intention to quit Panthers after scoring just four points in a 44-34 win over Boston in the National League.

FOOTBALL: Bob Doyle saved a point for Posh after Harry Holman had opened the scoring for Exeter in a Division Three match at London Road.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town fought back from 2-0 to draw 2-2 in a friendly against Northampton Saints. Max Webb and Jimmy Wheeler scored the Town goals for whom Jeremy Stanyard missed a penalty stroke.

RUGBY UNION: Unbeaten Borough were held to a 6-6 draw by Towcester. John Williams converted penalties in the first and last minutes.
