40 YEARS AGO: CRICKET: Mitchells clinched the Peterborough League title for the sixth time in eight years when beating Co-op by eight wickets. Alan Lambert and Dave Beaver, bowling unchanged, destroyed Co-op for 39.
CRICKET: Ray Panikkar, the Peterborough Town scorer for over 20 years, collapsed and died during Town's match at Crawthorne Road.

CRICKET: Peterborough Town's Cyril Stimpson took 6-74 in a drawn match against Kett
ering.

FOOTBALL: Perkins began life in Division One of the Peterborough League with a comfortable win. Freshly relegated from the Premier Division, they beat St Ives 4-1 with goals by Jim Warnes, Joe Martin, Bruce Bradley and Dave Waghorn.

FOOTBALL: Eye United also kicked off their Division One campaign with a handsome victory. They beat Stamford Rovers 8-1 with Keith Smart scoring a hat-trick. Also on target for them were Charlie Guest (2), Barry Nightingale (2) and Geoff Matthews.

POSH: Jim Hall earned Posh a 2-2 draw with Bradford City at London Road with a goal three minutes from time. The crowd was 6,457.

CRICKET: David Smith steered Peterborough Town seconds to victory at March with 7-19.

30 YEARS AGO

CRICKET:
It was a good weekend for Ufford Park's Terry Rawlings. First he scored 52 against Wigston and then on the Sunday made 89 against Ketton.

CRICKET: Bourne thrashed Market Deeping thanks to Peter Slowey's 6-13.

POSH: A last-gasp goal by Barry Butlin earned Posh a 1-0 win over Hull in the League Cup and a place in the second round against Middlesbrough.

FOOTBALL: Stamford hammered United Counties League rivals Holbeach 6-0 with goals by Dave Marshall, Kevin Horn (2), Geoff Biggs, Nicky Papworth and Robbie Clarke.

POSH: Two Alan Slough goals earned Posh a 2-1 win over Elton John's Watford in Division Three.

FOOTBALL: Franco Piergianni led the way with four goals as Eye United hammered Peterborough League Premier Division rivals Leverington 11-2. Tony Jones and Hugh Brady bagged two apiece.

FOOTBALL: Posh Youths were hammered 4-1 at Reading with Trevor Slack scoring the consolation effort.

BOWLS: John Dickenson and David Broadhurst won the men's pairs title for Northants at the English Championships at Skegness.

RUGBY: Peterborough's second team skipper Curly Hodson broke his wrist in the club's final pre-season trial match.

20 YEARS AGO

POSH:
New striker Nick Cusasck hit the winner in a 2-1 friendly win over a Tottenham Hotspur side at London Road.

CRICKET: Peterborough Town newcomer Saleem Mohammed hit a brilliant 111 off 115 deleiveries for the seonds in a win over Long Sutton seconds.
