10 YEARS AGO - 1998:
POSH: Boss Barry Fry insisted he would not be driven out by the boo-boys. Some supporters called for his head less than an hour into the new season as Posh were beaten 2-0 at home by Halifax.
MOTORSPORT: Wisbech man David James claimed World Sidecar Championship glory along with Yorkshire-based partner Steve Webster at Oschersleben in Germany. Their fourth victory of the season put them in an unassailable position at the top of the standings.

CRICKET: Eddie Sly interrupted his honeymoon to inspire struggling Spalding to an eight-wicket South Lincs League success over Grantham. Sly claimed 7-44 and then hit a quickfire 45.

SNOOKER: Chatteris cueman Joe Perry continued his run of good form when thrashing Robert Milkins 5-1 to move into the fourth qualifying round of the UK Championship.

FOOTBALL: Revenge was sweet for Oundle as two faultless Billy Dunn penalties wrapped up a 2-1 Jack Hogg Charity Shield triumph over Wisbech Reserves - the team that had beaten them in the previous season's PFA Senior Cup showpiece.

SPEEDWAY: French rider Phillipe Berge notched eight points on his home debut as Panthers trimmed up Edinburgh 56-34. Glenn Cunningham roared to a 15-point maximum.

20 YEARS AGO - 1988:

CRICKET: Five Test stars were in the Nottinghamshire team that won an exhibition game at March by 112 runs, but Tim Robinson, Derek Randall, Bruce French, Eddie Hemmings and West Indian Franklyn Stephenson were all put in the shade by March spinner Gary Chapman as he took 7-77.

POSH: Posh were beaten 3-0 by Kettering in the final of the Maunsell Cup. Only super saves from Joe Neenan spared Mick Jones' men further embarrassment.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers pair Mick Poole and Craig Hodgson couldn't prevent Australia from slipping out of the World Team Cup at the semi-final stage. Poole scored nine points and Hodgson notched six as the men from Down Under were beaten into third place by hosts Germany and Hungary.

ROWING: Peterborough City managed four successes at their record-breaking Summer Regatta at Thorpe Meadows. James Hunter-Todd managed a sculling double, with Rachel Headland and the coxed duo of Henry Rayment and Rob Butterwick also obliging.

CRICKET: Mick Jex clubbed a classy century and then took the vital last-ball catch as Castor beat Moulton Harrox by 132 runs in the South Lincs League.
