40 YEARS AGO - 1968
FOOTBALL: Demoted Posh made sure Grimsby would be joining them in Division Four next season after holding the Mariners to a 1-1 draw at Blundell Park. Peter Thompson hit the Posh goal and Tony Millington shone in goal.
CRICKET: Brian Compton delivered a classy all-round display as Peterborough Town launched their season with a convincing win over Southill Park at Crawthorne Road. Compton thumped 36 with the bat and then took 4-28 as Town triumphed
by 74 runs.

FOOTBALL: George Sharman and Graham Harris were the goalscoring heroes as March Town won for the first time this year with a 2-0 victory over Gothic.

RUGBY: Perkins Rugby Club hit the headlines, but it wasn't for their try-scoring exploits. No, the city men were accused of stealing two concrete flower pots from the hotel they stayed at in Bournemouth during a rugby festival!

FOOTBALL: Dave Lindsey scored one of the goals as Stamford Youths beat a team of youngsters from the German town of Minden 4-1 in front of a crowd of more than 700 people.

30 YEARS AGO - 1978

FOOTBALL:
Substitute David English was the hero as Focus retained the Peterborough Youth League Under 16 KO Cup. The city side were behind and had keeper Paul Day go off injured before English made his great entrance with a match-winning brace.

SPEEDWAY: Dave Gooderham made a dream Panthers debut as the city side slammed Barrow 56-22 at the Showground.

The Ipswich man, who had only signed a couple of days before the meeting, weighed in with 10 points to top score for Panthers.

RUGBY: Borough's amazing winning run continued as they accounted for Coventry side Barker Butts to rack up a 26th success of the season. The city men were behind at one stage, but tries from Brian Jones, Tony Elliott and Tich Ireson turned things around.

HOCKEY: Max Webb and Dave Remnant found the net as Town turned in a great team display with a 2-0 win over Harlow.

GOLF: Burghley Park professional Mark James was left to rue a poor third round of 78 as he finished fifth in the Portuguese Open at Portimao, three shots behind winner Howard Clark.

POSH: Boss John Barnwell insisted a 1-0 defeat at Plymouth was nothing more than a hiccup in the club's promotion surge.

Barnwell blamed keeper Keith Waugh and defender Ian Ross for the Pilgrims' goal.

20 YEARS AGO - 1988

HOCKEY:
Budding young star Jacqui Shaw from Farcet struck gold when helping England Under 18s to victory in the Home Countries Championships in Swindon. Shaw starred in wins over Wales (4-1), Ireland (3-0) and Scotland (2-0).

RUGBY: Tony Shaw weighed in with two tries as Westwood powered into the ET Cup final for the first time in their history.
