10 YEARS AGO - 1998
HOCKEY:
Peterborough Town failed in their bid to reach the National League through the play-offs, but five goals from Gary Hales and strikes from Jim Tansley and Steve Gregory enabled the city side to beat Robinsons 7-4 in their final match at the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes.
SNOOKER: City professional Mark Gray fought back from 3-1 down to knock Jimmy White out of the British Open. Joe Perry from Chatteris lost 5-3 to John Parrott.

FOOTBALL: Bretton Woods beat Bushfield 7-0 in the fin
al of the Peterborough Schools Year 11 KO Cup. Robert Temperley (3), Richard Platten (2), Lee Tyler and Michael Ferguson scored the goals.

FOOTBALL: Goalkeeper Michael Haxthausen was the star as Posh youths restricted Blackburn to a 1-0 lead in the first leg of their FA Youth Cup semi-final at Ewood Park. Martin Taylor and David Dunn played for Blackburn.

FOOTBALL: Posh full-back Adrian Boothroyd quit playing at the age of 27, but accepted a coaching role with the club's Academy.

HOCKEY: City student Kirsty Bowden was appointed captain of England Ladies for the their World Cup campaign in Holland.

20 YEARS AGO - 1988
FOOTBALL
: Steve Phillips poached a hat-trick as Posh won 4-0 at rock bottom Newport. However the cash-strapped Welsh club wouldn't give him the match ball.

ATHLETICS: City-based Eric Southam won the senior round the city race with Nene Valley Harrier Peter Woods finishing third. Caroline Thomas of Peterborough AC won the junior girls race.

SQUASH: Barclays Bank Old Fletton lost in the final of the National Bankers event in London. The three-man team of Robert Pegg, Peter Hand and Steve Lakeman won £100 for their troubles.

ICE HOCKEY: Pirates escaped relegation from the National League in dramatic style. Leading 14-12 from the first leg of their relegation play-off at Telford, Pirates fought back from 8-3 down to 8-7 in the home leg – Garry Unger scored the decisive goal in the final match of his career.

BOWLS: City pair Maurice Stratton and Geoff Newson won the English Bowling Federation's indoor pairs title at Long Eaton.

SPEEDWAY: Panthers reject Nigel Flatman returned to Alwalton to haunt his old club. Flatman scored 11 points as Poole scored a shock 50-48 win – Ian Barney (14) and Mick Poole (13) were the Panthers top scorers.

FOOTBALL: Posh midfielder Mick Gooding was voted into the Division Four team of the year by his fellow professionals.

30 YEARS AGO - 1978
FOOTBALL:
Posh finally found their scoring boots as Tommy Robson (2), Chris Turner, Billy McEwan and Trevor Anderson netted in a 5-0 Division Three win over Bradford at London Road.

FOOTBALL: Cracovia won the Handicap Cup competition at the Wirrina Fives with an 8-5 win over Freemans in the final.
