10 YEARS AGO - 1998:
FOOTBALL:
David Farrell hit the winner as Posh laboured to a 2-1 win over Chester in Division Three. Martin Carruthers also netted as Posh hung on to a play-off spot.
HOCKEY: Tornadoes won through to the semi-finals of the National Mixed Cup with a 4-3 win at Wakefield. Mark Britton scored all four goals, but striker Gary Hales and goalkeeper Simon Green also impressed.
POOL: Car
ly Smith won a place in the England squad after winning seven out of seven matches in a trial at Telford.
FOOTBALL: Peterborough Boys Under 14s finished their East Midlands League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Leicester. Chris Brown of Orton Longueville scored the city goal.
Squad: Adam Mansell (Stanground), Sam Kingston (Orton Longueville), Brent Frith (Jack Hunt), John Baker (King's), Matthew Powell (AMVC), Thomas Ruscillo (AMVC), Matthew Hall (Jack Hunt), Lee Benton (Ken Stimpson), Gary Pacey (Ken Stimpson), Tom Wardell (Ken Stimpson), Craig Norman (Stanground), Luke Weston (St John Fisher), Melvin Sanderson (St John Fisher), David Hall (Bretton Woods), Dean Tyler (Bretton Woods), Chris Brown (Orton Longueville).
SPEEDWAY: Panthers were well represented in the England youth squads. Paul Clews and David Howe both made the under 16 side with Simon Stead and Oliver Allen picked for under 15 duty.
GOLF: Milton Ladies beat Thorpe Wood 3-1 in the Mail on Sunday Classic. Sue Hennigan beat Rose Hard, Pauline Levoi beat Jane Hinch, Gill Preston beat Pauline Kevin, but Ros Cuthbert lost to Janet Rook.
FOOTBALL: Posh manager Barry Fry failed to make a transfer deadline day signing for the first time in 27 years as a manager.

20 YEARS AGO - 1988:

ICE HOCKEY: Steve Rattle was axed as Peterborough Pirates coach after 20 months in the job. Poor results cost Rattle his job as he left just as Pirates were facing crucial relegation play-off matches.
WEIGHT-LIFTING: Ben Devonshire and Stephen Ward won British Schoolboy Olympic Weight-lifting titles.
FOOTBALL: Posh scored a stunning 1-0 success at Division Four leaders Wolves with a Mick Gooding goal.
SPEEDWAY: Peterborough Panthers crashed to a 55-37 challenge defeat at Milton Keynes in farcically wet conditions. Aussie Craig Hodgson top scored for Panthers with 10 points with Mick Poole adding eight.
FOOTBALL: Stamford won their first match under new manager Colin Foster when beating Stotfold 2-0 in the United Counties Premier Division. Steve Blades and Dave Torrence scored the goals.
HORSE RACING: Cuvee Charlie, a horse owned by Stamford Snooker Club boss Richard Davies, was a 33-1 winner of the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster.

30 YEARS AGO - 1978:

GOLF: Jimmy Ellis and Howard May won Milton's Winter pairs League after a titanic struggle with joint runners-up Paul Coffey and Jim Weston, and Ian McCrae and Dave Stewart.
FOOTBALL: Posh and West Brom fought out a 0-0 draw in an FA Youth Cup quarter final in front of 3,000 fans at London Road.
Posh: Shortland, Gynn, Collins, Quow, Leadbeater, Winters, Chard, Piergianni, O'Brien, Cliss, Ilsley. Sub Genovese.
FOOTBALL: Stamford hammered local rivals Spalding 6-1 to stay on course for the United Counties Premier Division title. Geoff Biggs scored twice against his former club with Malcolm Hird, Steve Ward, Eddie Broadhurst and Gordon Hall also on target.
SPEEDWAY: Peterborough Panthers took the honours in the Easter Triangle Tournament after a thrilling last leg at Rye House. The hosts won the meeting by 22 points, but Panthers team of Kevin Hawkins, Nigel Flatman, Andy Hines, Ian Clark, Nigel Couzens and Brian Clark won by three points on aggregate.
RUGBY UNION: John Williams broke Borough's points-scoring record for the second season running. The Deacon's schoolteacher reached 220 points as Borough beat Spalding 13-4.
ATHLETICS: Phil Romaine of Holbeach finished third in the Easter Monday Round the City Race behind England international Nick Lees. Holbeach retained the team award as Mike Exton and Ron Brewitt also finished in the top 20.
SNOOKER: Teenager Vaughan Lutkin of Crowland C made a 59 break, the highest of the Spalding Snooker League season.

40 YEARS AGO - 1968:

BOXING: Kelly Sherwood of Walton ABC was an unlucky loser at a show at Littleport's Regal Cinema. Clubmate Stuart Bradley was also beaten.
FOOTBALL: A five-star display from young Bobby Downes was the highlight of Posh's 1-1 draw at home to Swindon in Division Three. Stuart Brace claimed a late equaliser for Posh.
RUGBY UNION: A try from Tom McClure and a conversion by Barry Vanstone secured a 5-0 win for Peterborough over Old Newts.
HOCKEY: A 'grudge' match between Town Over 30s and Town Under 30s finished goalless. John Martin and Tom Harrold played well for the oldies with Ged Watts and John Day the stars for the youngsters.
FOOTBALL: Stanground completed a Peterborough Schools League and Cup double for the second successive season by beating Lincoln Road 3-1 in the Cup Final at Loncon Road. Malcom Larrington, Robin Wade and Kevin Nutt scored for Stanground with Richie Burkitt replying for Lincoln Road.
