40 YEARS AGO - 1968:
FOOTBALL: Frank Rankmore scored the only goal as Posh beat Southport in a game described as 'disjointed and dismally uninteresting' by The Evening Telegraph.
HOCKEY: Peterborough Town's reputation as a classy team spread across the English Channel. The city club were invited to play in a tournament in the French town of La Baule in Brittany.
RUGBY: Geoff Barber collected two tries as Borough seconds won 13-5 at Old Cantabrigians. The Borough team played a man short throughout the game after Tony Dalton was unable to find the ground.
FOOTBALL: Goalkeeper Mick Drewery had a match to forget as his errors led to both goals in Posh Reserves' 2-0 defeat at Arsenal Reserves.
BILLIARDS: Werrington wonder Markham Wildman was feeling just champion after being crowned England Amateur Billiards champion. The city cueman defeated Clive Everton in the three-session final to take the title 14 years after his previous national triumph.
FOOTBALL: Eye United stormed into the Northants Lower Junior Cup final after smashing Clipston 7-2 amid a flurry of goals. Hat-trick hero John Willis, brace-bagger Roy Rome and Barry Nightingale and Terry Wagg hit the Eye goals.
30 YEARS AGO - 1978:
ATHLETICS: Geoff Capes had to be content with a bronze medal in the shot-putt at the European Indoor Championships in Milan. He had never been outside the top two at this event before.
POSH: Club hero Chris Turner's proposed transfer to Wolves fell through only a couple of hours before the end of transfer deadline day. Posh manager John Barnwell blasted Wanderers boss Sammy Chung for trying to get Turner "on the cheap".
ANGLING: Baker Perkins angler Geoff Bell described himself as 'a bit of a pike specialist' after landing a 14lb beauty from the King's Dyke Drain.
BASKETBALL: Skipper Derek Smith delivered 16 important points as the Arthur Mellows Village College Under 14 team breezed into the final of the Beds and Cambs Cup. Smith shone in the semi-final success over Bottisham College.
SQUASH: City ace Heather Simpson made it to the semi-finals of the East of England Open Invitation tournament in Norwich. The Northants champion was eliminated by top South African player Rene Auchaunch in the last four.
FOOTBALL: Dace Marshall hit a hat-trick to put title-chasing Stamford back on track in the United Counties League. Malcolm Hird, Geoff Biggs and Marcus Burrell claimed the other goals in a 6-1 wallopping of Irthlingborough.
20 YEARS AGO - 1988:
FOOTBALL: Perkins reached the final of the Northants Junior Cup with a 3-1 success over Higham Ferrars in the semi-final. Graham Stewart, Franco Piergianni and Graham Speechley scored the goals.
HOCKEY: Bretton Beavers opened the Inaugural Astro Six-A-Side Indoor competition with wins over Wittering (6-1) and Bourne (4-1). Jim Davis, normally a goalkeeper, scored seven of Beavers' goals with Mike Yeoman, Adrian Milner and Steve Jackson also on target.
FOOTBALL: Mick Gooding scored the only goal of the game as Posh won 1-0 at Exeter in a dreadful Fourth Division clash. Posh remained in 15th place.
SQUASH: Peterborough Town were relegated from Cambs League Division One for the first time in their history ater failing to pick up the 13 points required for safety from their final match of the season against Crown, Outwell. Chris Davey and Peter Hand won their matches, but Chris Heeley, Robert Pegg and Bob Smith were all beaten.
ICE HOCKEY: Pirates virtually sealed their relegation from the British Premier League with defeats against Fife (8-2) and Murrayfield (11-6). Todd Bidner scored in both games with Kenny McKie (2), Kenny MacDonald, Jim McTaggert, Carl Stripling and Garry Ungar also on target over the weekend.
10 YEARS AGO - 1998:
FOOTBALL: Ortonians sprang a shock by beating Robbie Cooke's Warboys 3-1 in the semi-final of the Hunts Cup. Paul Kirk, Darren Bradley and Mark Wilson were the Ortonians scorers. Ortonians: Dean, Coupe, Davidson, Wilson, Ellis, Fletcher, Daniels, M. Bradley, D. Bradley, Kirk, Morrow. Subs Horner, Smith, Anderson.
FOOTBALL: Chris Cleaver grabbed a second-half equaliser as Posh were held to a 1-1 draw by Exeter at London Road. Posh stayed fifth in the Division Three table.
RUGBY UNION: Carole Estall broke a Borough club record by running in eight tries for the ladies team against Biggleswade during an 85-0 win. John Sismey was the previous record holder with six tries in a single game.
HOCKEY: Peterborough Athletic survived relegation from East Division Two with a last-match 3-0 win over Welwyn. Wayne Humphreys, Rob Harrison and Paul Day were the Athletic scorers.
ICE HOCKEY: Jesse Hamill claimed his first Pirates hat-trick in a 17-4 romp at Cardiff in the National League play-offs. Kevin King added four goals.
ATHLETICS: Nene Valley Harriers reached the medals for the fourth year in succession at the South of England Veterans Cross Country Championships. Paul Spick, Stan Owen, Michael Barnsdale and Ray Church delivered a third place finish.
