10 YEARS AGO - 1998:ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates lost both of their opening play-off games, 5-2 at home to Fife and 6-3 at Telford. Ted Russell scored three of the Pirates' goals.
FOOTBALL: Spalding lost their FA Vase quarte
r final 2-1 at home to Tiverton. Nick Keeble scored 'The Tulips' consolation following a cross by former Posh winger Worrell Sterling, while Tuncay Korkmaz was unlucky not to force a draw as his header hit a post.
HOCKEY: Peterborough Town clinched the first East Premier A Division title in their history with a 3-0 win at Cambridge University. Steve Gregory (2) and Gary Hales scored the Town goals.
FOOTBALL: Posh manager Barry Fry insisted he was 'no quitter' at a fans' forum. He was backed to the hilt by chairman Peter Boizot despite a run of results which had seen Posh turn from automatic promotion favourites to play-off hopefuls.
FOOTBALL: Warboys received a fee for a player for the first time in the club's history when Bretton-based Mark Paul (19) moved to Kings Lynn for a four-figure amount.
FOOTBALL: Posh 'keeper Mark Tyler was called into the Football League XI for a friendly against Serie B at Charlton. Tyler replaced injury victim Richard Wright.
RUGBY UNION: Borough outclassed Huntingdon in securing a 31-5 friendly win. Prop Michael Royal claimed two tries with Chris Phillips, John Griffin and Heath Purvis also crossing.
20 YEARS AGO - 1988:POOL: Eastfield B pulled off a shock 5-4 win over Comet in a Winter League KO Cup match. Lee Nesbitt, Shane Graham, Eddie Ireson, Brian Fovargue and Glen Harrison were the Eastfield winners.
FOOTBALL: Liam Schneider (Walton) and Andrew Streeton (Jack Hunt) scored the goals as Peterborough Boys Under 12s earned a 2-2 draw at Leeds.
HOCKEY: Netherton-based banker Peter Lambert umpired the Varsity match between Cambridge and Oxford Universities at Lord's.
ATHLETICS: Nene Valley, led by Giovanni Rizzo, Pete Bevilacqua, Ray Church and Peter Woods, clinched the Icknield Cross Country Championships.
FOOTBALL: Posh battled to a 0-0 draw at Cardiff in Division Four thanks to splendid performances from goalkeeper Joe Neenan and full-back Alan Paris.
ICE HOCKEY: Pirates crashed to two heavy defeats in the Heineken Premier League, 9-2 at Ayr and 14-7 at Fife. Gary Unger and Todd Bidner scored the goals in Ayr, while Tim Peacock bagged a brace in Fife.
RUGBY UNION: A late try from Paul Freeman saved Borough's blushes as they laboured to a 12-9 win over March in the Evening Telegraph Cup. Alan Griffin added the other points with successful kicks.
