It was an interesting time, I was 8 years old when war broke out and 14 when it finished. With RAF Westwood being an OTU and all the air bases circling Peterborough, it was little wonder that the skies were full of aircraft all day long. To add to the interest we had film stars Clarke Gable, stationed at Polebrook and Colonel James Stewart, Pilot and section leader, on bombing missions stationed for a time at Molesworth, we would visit Midgate where the US officer's club was situated and star watch.
In Ramsey, at the George Hotel, we would see the British bomber crews with their explanatory wings and brevets, little knowing how short their life expectancy was, and how young they were.
And how the no nonsense US MP's dealt with trouble makers at pubs and places of entertainment.

That downed German bomber is a well known Peterborough photo. The Junkers 88 formed part of display outside the Kings School which my dad went to see.
