He said: "After my 16th birthday in October 1932, I spent six or seven months as an electrician's mate. At that time the hotel was being completely rewired by a group of electricians assembled from the whole LNER network.
"The old wiring with its beautiful brass covered switches was taken out and the new wiring installed in metal conduit pipes.
"These pipes were put into channels cut into the plaster.
"The required wire was then fed through and connected to the switch or power point. The conduit was then plastered over with the switches etc being flush to the walls.
"After each room or section was finished the painters and decorators moved in and redecorated.
"I was completely amazed at the variety and quality of the wallpapers being used.
"The electrician I worked with was an extremely good looking fellow from York, known to all as Yorkie. I believe he was accommodated in the hotel premises for the period, but I do know he was causing a lot of friction between the female workers at that time.
"I do not know how long the job took as I left after seven months."
