ONE of the city's most promising young bands were crowned the winners of a closely-fought band competition at The Met Lounge.
Electro-rockers A Girl Called Kate won the Straight to Hell battle of the bands, and have scooped a £200 prize, a day's recording at Jigsaw Studios and a lovely shiny trophy.

The five-piece fought off competition from an eclectic mix of bands, including Brassphemy, We Are Fiction and Komatyzed.

Four heats led up to the sold-out final, and Shaun Phillips, of Straight to Hell, said the competition had been a real success.

"We Are Fiction gave an awesome vocal performance setting the stage for Komatyzed, who had the biggest brutal mosh pit we have seen for a while.

"Next came A Girl Called Kate, who started a mass dance session on the floor, before Brassphemy carried on the dancing and skanking – even with a replacement drummer coming in at late notice."

He said that, although it was a close run thing, ultimately A Girl Called Kate were deserved winners.

"They have been the most watchable and original band out of all the shows. We want to say thanks to everyone for taking part and attending the shows, without you it wouldn't happen," he said.
