A SUCCESSFUL volunteer street leader scheme piloted in Stanground is being expanded to cover more areas of the city, including Woodston. The roll-out to more communities for Peterborough City Council's volunteer street leader scheme was due to be officially announced at the town hall, in Bridge Street, today at 2pm.

The scheme has been running as a pilot since July in city areas, including Stanground, and it is hoped the next phase will lay the foundations for street leaders to be appointed in every community in Peterborough.

Today, the city council's head of strategic growth and development Adrian Chapman will meet two volunteer street leaders, street leader co-ordinators and a neighbourhood investment area leader to mark the next phase of the scheme which expands into areas including Woodston in the coming weeks.

Volunteer street leaders report environmental problems such as litter, graffiti, street lighting defects, abandoned vehicles, fly-posting and other issues such as street furniture defects and overgrown vegetation.

In addition, street leaders have helped improve residents' quality of life, increase participation in community groups and encourage residents to communicate with one another about local issues and events.

They report problems by using a freephone telephone number which has been set up specifically for street leaders, or via an online reporting form.

The council's cabinet member for housing, regeneration and economic growth Cllr Graham Murphy said: "I am delighted we have arrived at the stage of the street leader scheme whereby we can confidently commence a controlled roll-out.

"Other areas within the city are going to benefit from the conscious effort and hard work residents are putting into improving the communities in which they live."

Neighbourhood investment area leader for strategic growth and development Kathie Longbone added: "The pilot scheme aimed to recruit 25 street leaders and more than 50 people came forward, which obviously exceeded expectations.

"We have developed an effective training course for them and we are hoping to enhance it as the scheme progresses."
