Longthorpe: Youngsters flock to 'mad' tea party

MADNESS was the first word that sprang to mind for the organisers of Longthorpe Brownies tea party.

MADNESS was the first word that sprang to mind for the organisers of Longthorpe Brownies tea party. In an event worthy of the Mad Hatter himself, more than 300 parents, pupils and staff at Longthorpe Primary School flocked into the hall to sample the home-made cakes on offer and grab a brew at the same time.

And for the Brownies from the 2nd Longthorpe pack and 11th Peterborough pack obliged them with flapjacks and shortbread the 280 raised for charity was the icing on the cake.

Brown Owl Susan Dunthorne said she was really proud of all the youngsters.

She said: "From 3pm until 4.40pm we did not stop, people were queueing out the door, it really was that popular.

"To raise this much money for charity is fantastic and the effort they put in was amazing.

"We also had some great volunteers who worked tirelessly, so thanks should go to them as well."

The funds raised will now provide a welcome cash boost to The Willow Foundation, a charity founded by former England and Arsenal goalkeeper, Bob Wilson, in memory of his daughter.

The charity is dedicated to bringing special days to the seriously ill who are between the ages 16 and 40 years of age and live in the United Kingdom.

The special days offer much needed time out from the stresses of living with a life-threatening condition, a chance to feel normal and to create happy memories.

And the Brownies are looking at the this event as practice for the Longthorpe Primary School's village fete, which is set to be held on Saturday.

Susan added: "I am also on the PTA at the school, so it's great to almost get a dry run.

"It's the first time we have done it and I am sure following this success it won't be last."
