Review: Various Artists - The Brit Awards 2010

(Rhino) 3-CD: The Brits have their critics, boy do they have their critics, but it is still one of the most eagerly awaited events in the pop music calendar.

(Rhino) 3-CD: The Brits have their critics, boy do they have their critics, but it is still one of the most eagerly awaited events in the pop music calendar. This year is the awards' 30th anniversary and that's reflected by this accompanying album.

CDs 1 &2 feature the cream of the last 12 months' pop hits, while CD3 concentrates on some of the big names who have graced the Brits over the last three decades including Queen, the Spice Girls and Oasis.

The first CD is dominated by some of the great female artists who demonstrated girl power was alive and kicking in 2009.

Lady Gaga starts things off and the pace doesn't slack with killer contributions from Cheryl Cole and her No 1 hit Fight For This Love and Lily Allen with The Fear.

The boys do get a look in with tracks from Robbie Williams, Paolo Nutini and Michael Buble.

Budding superstars JLS kick off CD2 with Beat Again followed by emerging talents including Little Boots, La Roux and Friendly Fires.

The old guard flex their muscles too with tracks from big hitters The Prodigy and U2.

CD3 includes three live performances from previous award nights and a string of absolute classics including Amy Winehouse's Rehab, Prince's Purple Rain and Take That's Patience.

Among these 60 tracks, personal favourites are Dizzee Rascal's Bonkers and Rabbit Heart from Florence & The Machine, while I could live my entire life without ever needing to hear Chipmunk's Oopsy Daisy again.

There is though something for everybody and this is as good (and as broad) a snapshot of popular music as you'll get anywhere.
