Review - Dave McPherson at Club Revolution

Review Dave McPherson + Marc Halls, Club Revolution, Peterborough

THE thought of six acoustic performers on a single evening, I must admit, did not fill me with excitement. However, the five-minute change-over time between acts and short sets meant that boredom was never allowed to creep in.

InMe mainman Dave McPherson played a crowd-pleasing set, which took in his solo album, band tracks and covers. Not only were the songs well crafted gems, but McPherson actually performed them rather than just sung them.

His years on the road with InMe showed, too. He is an engaging and energetic frontman, who peppered his set with captivating and humorous banter.

It must be said that both the songs from his solo album and those from his day job worked perfectly in this stripped-down and raw format. The former are more suited to this environment, but it was the latter that were the real crowd-pleasers.

McPherson complained that the calls for an encore spoiled his finale – a brilliant rendition of Boom! Shake The Room – but the follow-up, a version of Radiohead’s Creep, was equally memorable.

Fei Comodo buddy Marc Halls was less engaging, and only the Comodo songs made any kind of impact. In fact, a Great Notion – Peterborough’s own Jordy – made more of an impact, playing in his pants, joking with the crowd and playing an exhilarating shoutalong brand of acoustic punk rock.

All in all, an enjoyable evening, which was more about the songs than the noise – which is no bad thing. Paul Benton VVVV
