Review: 'Hands' by Little Boots

(679/Atlantic) Her story is a classic tale of success in the internet age. YouTube exposure ramped up the interest and virtually overnight the signature of Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots became a much-sought after prize. Her rise and rise continued when the 24-year-old native of Blackpool was then given a coveted slot on Jools Holland's show. Then she topped the BBC's Sound of 2009 poll.

Even by the pop biz's standards, this was quite something to live up to. Her debut album is good, very good in places, but doesn't quite live up to the hype.

But it would be a big mistake to dismiss her. Better to admire the fact that she has emerged as an artist of real substance with a rich promise despite the potentially suffocating level of expectation.

There is wonderful freshness and immediacy to the songs on this debut album, although their staying power might be an issue. But this won't be a problem with the ludicrously catchy New In Town which will surely be one of the songs of the summer of '09.

Stuck On Repeat and Mathmatics will already be well known to fans. The former is modern dance pop inspired by Giorgio Moroder while the latter is home to a thrilling pop tune.

This year has seen an explosion of young female talent – many of them breathing new life into electronic dance-pop – but, come the end of the year, Little Boots will still be one of the most talked about newcomers.
