IT was the best of times at Peterborough’s libraries over the weekend as a historian actor enchanted visitors in the guise of Charles Dickens.

In a tale of three libraries, historian Richard Jones visited Bretton, Orton and Werrington libraries on Saturday to mark the bi-centenary of the literary genius’ birth on February 7, 1812.

And such was the interest in everything Dickens at the events, Mr Jones has succeeded in creating great expectations for the main Dickens-themed event in Peterborough, which will be held at the John Clare Theatre this evening and feature readings from Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and Hard Times.

Kerry Green, customer officer at Orton Library, said: “We had a comfortable crowd in the library and it was very well-received.

“In fact such was the interest in Dickens that Mr Jones stayed an extra half-an-hour to answer more questions.

“A lot of those who came on Saturday expressed an interest in attending the event at the John Clare Theatre.”

The event at the John Clare Theatre in Central Library, Broadway, will be held between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. To book tickets, call Vivacity on 01733 864280.
