Visit house's historic rose gardens

VISITORS will be able to enjoy a blooming great time at historic Peckover House next month.

VISITORS will be able to enjoy a blooming great time at historic Peckover House next month. With large crowds expected to gather for the Wisbech Rose Fair on July 1, the National Trust is to open the house’s garden gates to show off its collection of roses in full bloom.

An oasis of colour and scent, the gardens at Peckover are home to more than 60 species of rose, including a large number of old-fashioned varieties.

Rose arches now support some of these highly scented roses popular in the Edwardian and Victorian periods, which include Phyllis Bide, Aime Vibert, Madame Grgoire Staechelin, Honorine de Brabant and Cline Forrestier.

Once an elaborate scheme of flower beds, roses and ironwork, the gardens at Peckover have been lovingly cared for and recreated over the years.

The gardening team has been working hard in preparation for the forthcoming annual flower festival, to make sure that the garden is looking its best for visitors.

Head gardener at Peckover Allison Napier said: “It’s the combination of large and small pink, white and crimson roses, whose blooms cascade over the ironworks of the rose beds at Peckover in June and July that is one of the main highlights of the garden”.

nPeckover House and garden will be open for Wisbech Rose Fair from July 1 to July 4, from noon to 5pm (last admission to the house is at 4pm).
