Comedy: Richard Herring at Radius, Peterborough
“Jesus was cool, it’s just all the people who follow him who are such idiots. He’s like the Fonz in that respect.”
Such is the view of comedian Richard Herring in his latest show Christ on a Bike: The Second Coming.
It arrives in Peterborough on Saturday (Radius, in Northminster) and The Guide caught up with Richard to find out what the show sets out to explore.
“The show is partly an attempt to justify my own existence I guess. I’m comparing my life achievements with those of the Messiah,” he said.
“I see myself as an atheist with an odd obsession. I was brought up as a Christian and believed it for a while but then I started to turn against it.”
Richard first performed the Christ on a Bike 10 years ago, when he was 33. Prior to that he was famed for being one half of the TV duo who brought us Fist Of Fun and This Morning With Richard Not Judy (along with Stewart Lee).
He revealed he decided to revisit the show as he likes to challenge himself, and this was apparent in his previous show, Hitler Moustache.
For this he grew a pencil thin moustache for the duration of the tour, which stretched out for more than a year.
“I do miss it now it’s gone. There were times when I would do the odd one-off show last autumn and have to grow it back.
“But there’s been five or six months without it now, but at least I’m not getting as many odd looks on the street.”
Richard believes that comedy is there to look at controversial issues so people can then discuss the issues brought up.
“With Christ on a Bike I’ve spoken to some of the religious people who have come to see it and they say they have liked it because it asks questions they would have thought about,” he added.
But don’t expect anything too deep, the preview notes reveal there’s an imaginary bike ride and Richard’s own dissection of the Ten Commandments will entertain as well.
Peterborough is one of the first dates on the spring tour which sees him travel around the country until the middle of May. Like last year, he will be doing a bucket collection for the Scope charity at every town or city he visits.
“I raised £20,000 last time, which is huge amount when you think about it, so I’m hoping to do the same in 2011.
“People are always so generous!”
Tickets for Richard’s show in Peterborough on Saturday cost £15. They are available from the venue, or by e-mailing Eye 2 Eye promoter David Ward at david.ward2008@btinternet.com
