TWO talented young figure skaters from a Peterborough ice rink have cut rings around stiff competition to star in a national show.

Evie Martin-Cuthbertson (7), from Bourne, and Eleanor Waldock, (9), from Thurlby, won an Ice Factor contest to find the region’s next up-and-coming skaters in November.

And the pair performed their winning two-minute ice dance during the interval of Holiday On Ice’s Tropicana - the Passion Tour, last night, cheered on by their family and friends.

The national touring show will run at the Exec at the East of England Showground, in Peterborough, until February 5.

Olympic figure skating medallist Robin Cousins, a former Dancing on Ice judge, helped the girls rehearse for their set yesterday afternoon, alongside their usual skating coach Kate Locks from Planet Ice, in Bretton.

Eleanor’s mother Sara Waldock described the girls rehearsals at the Exec centre as surreal and added that she felt quite sick on her way to watch them perform.

She said: “I really don’t know if they had any idea of the scale of the audience, they’re only little girls but they gave it their best shot.

“One way to describe their set is like fairies in little forest dressed in lime green leotards and tutus.”

Evie took her first steps on the ice at the age of four and has always been inspired by her amateur ice-skating grandfather, said her father Dale Cuthbertson.

He said: “I think we’re all very proud and I think everything has gone to plan.”

Professional figure skaters from the show also took time out from their final rehearsals to meet sports students from Ormiston Bushfield Academy, in Orton Goldhay.

The Year 12 and 13 students quizzed principal solo and pairs skaters about technique and training as part of their BTEC in P.E course work.

Teacher Tracy Conway thanked Holiday on Ice for helping her students develop their skating skills.

She said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to see elite skaters first hand, see their speed across the ice and the momentum they have.

“Time will tell what they have come away with in their assessments.”

Skate stars take to the ice

THOUSANDS of ice dance fans are expected to see Holiday on Ice’s Tropicana - the Passion Tour, which runs at the Exec at the East of England Showground until Sunday.

British figure skating legend and a judge from ITV’s Dancing on Ice Robin Cousins has created and choreographed routines for more than 40 professional ice dancers, set to a soundtrack featuring the hits of Barry Manilow.

Tickets range from £25 to £36, with senior citizens and children charged £12. A family ticket for £70 is also available, as are discounts for groups of more than 10.
