Peterborough Cathedral is in the running to be held up as a shining example of what makes Britain “Great”.
The historic building currently lies in tenth position in a live nationwide online poll for The Great Exhibition 2012 in which the public vote for their “favourite things” in the UK.
Once the most popular choices are selected, they will be celebrated at a huge exhibition which will be held between next year’s Olympics and Paralympics.
The cathedral is among the 370 nominees for the exhibition so far and the Very Reverend Charles Taylor, Dean of the cathedral, is urging city residents to cast their vote to ensure the ancient building gains the recognition it deserves.
What’s more, people are being encouraged to vote for Peterborough to become the venue for the two-week Great Exhibition festival next August.
Rev Taylor said: “Following the wealth of support we garnered on Twitter and Facebook for putting our majestic West Front in the list of the 7 Wonders of Great Britain, we now urge everyone who cares passionately about the city to vote for Peterborough Cathedral to be part of The Great Exhibition 2012.
“Olympic fever has already struck our wonderful city and the buzz surrounding the torch coming is very exciting.
“Imagine then, our city and cathedral being in the spotlight nationally and internationally.
“This is an opportunity for us to come together as a city to promote all the brilliant positive aspects of living here and to start using this as a lever to encourage more tourism coming into the city.
“This is a great opportunity we as a city can not waste.”
Despite the project only recently launching, Peterborough Cathedral has shot into tenth place above the likes of “the pub”, Jools Holland and Pimms as among the nation’s favourite things, but it remains below bacon sandwiches and a cup of tea.
Organisers were staggered by the response from the city.
A spokeswoman said: “Peterborough always seems to get behind these sorts of things. It’s great to see and could be the start of something huge.”
The project has the backing of a host of celebrities including Sir Michael Parkinson and Dame Ellen MacArthur.

The Great Exhibition 2012 will be a two-week live event held at an as yet undecided location.
It will feature three main attractions called The Footprint of Britain, The High Street of the Future and The Great Outdoors.
Every one of the public’s “favourite things” which makes it into the final list will feature on the Footprint of Britain.
The latest technology, inventions, and futuristic insights will be showcased in the High Street of the Future.
Finally, the Great Outdoors will celebrate the best of the countryside in the UK

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 05:11 PMCat, The cathedral for the See of Bath and Wells is at Wells not Bath so Bath is not a Cathedral - nor is it an abbey - it is a parish church. There is the world of difference between what something actually IS and what it's CALLED. In the case of Bath, it IS a parish church but it has an unofficial "nickname" of "Abbey". Rather like York IS a Cathedral but is almost always referred to as the "Minster". We can call the cathedral and the Bishop the "Temple of Venus" and the "handmaiden of the mashy oompah" but it will still be the Cathedral and the Bishop.

Monday, June 13, 2011 at 02:36 PMTintin@2; What about Bath Abbey then. Why is that not called a cathedral? In the past many abbots were also bishops. I was just suggesting if 'Peterborough Cathedral' was renamed 'Peterborough Abbey', it would signify its importance in history as an abbey. It would generate a lot of tourists as well. I would hardly called Peterborough's bishop's throne as being in the centre of the diocese ! What does the bishop think?

Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:52 AMCat, A Cathedral is called that because it contains the "Cathedra" - The Bishop's Throne and centre of the diocese. It was an "abbey" when it was a monastery run by an Abbot. I hope you are not suggesting kicking out the Bishop and his throne, inviting in a load of Roman Catholic monks and keeping making the whole place a private no-go area. Westminster abbey kept the "abbey" name but it is neither an abbey nor a cathedral - it is a "Royal Peculiar". Crowland "Abbey" and Thorney "Abbey" kept the name by habit - they are realy just parish churches.

Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:00 AMOf course Peterborough Cathedral was really an Abbey. Why not change it name back to 'Abbey' for 2012.....it would generate an interesting story.......
