Review: Secret Garden Party festival

IT takes a while to seep back into reality after a weekend at the sublime Secret Garden Party festival.

IT takes a while to seep back into reality after a weekend at the sublime Secret Garden Party festival.A giant perspex water slide, dancing nuns, sock wrestling, wandering grannies, a burning pirate ship, a silent disco, Grace Jones, naked mud wrestling and giant hammocks.

Not things you'll find down Peterborough's Central Park on a Saturday afternoon.

But at the Secret Garden Party festival, situated between Ramsey and Huntingdon, it's possible to see them all in just a brief wander through the idyllic site.

All 7,000 revellers leave their daily worries at the front gate, and make sure the next four days are as weird, wacky and wonderful as possible.

Particular musical highlights came from The Whip, as well as a suitably bizarre Sunday set from Late Of The Pier.

The main stage seems to be the focal point for afternoon chilling, but it soon came to life when Swedish-popsters Alphabeat played, and Brazilian-beat freaks Bonde de Role revelled in the multi-coloured plastic ball fight which erupted during their Saturday evening show.

On the smaller Where The Wild Things Are Stage (which this year was decked out with trees and comfy seats), Wave Machines, Lykke Li, The All New Adventures and My Pretend Orchestra all played magical sets to rapt audiences.

One downer was the 11pm curfew on Sunday night, but, all being well, this looks set to be extended next year, to make sure this fantastic party goes on that bit longer.

Early bird tickets for 2009 are on sale later this month – visit www.secretgardenparty.com to find out more.
