A NEW radio station is set to hit the air waves this week, promising Peterborough and Cambridgeshire residents a blend of local chat and music.

Black Cat Radio will air for the first time on digital radio at 7am on Tuesday.

It is being produced in St Ives, Huntingdon but will be broadcast across the north of Cambridgeshire, including Peterborough and parts of Lincolnshire.

Station director Tony Gillham, who has worked in radio for the last 40 years, said he was confident there would be plenty for Peterborough listeners when they tune in.

He said: “We have been broadcasting some programmes in St Neots for a while.

“During that time we have been looking to get a full-time licence from Ofcom but we were turned down last year.

“But now we have been granted the full-time licence.

“We were broadcasting over Christmas, but the first proper broadcast will go out on Tuesday.

“There will be live shows from 7am until 10pm and an auto service through the night.

“We want to bring local radio back to the area.

“We have tried to recreate the sort of programmes you got in the 1980s on stations like Hereward FM, with a good mix of relevant chat and music.

“It will see local DJs and presenters talking about local issues. While we have been focusing on St Neots in the test broadcast, we are aware that the area we cover will be much wider, which we will take into account.

“We also want to give people who want to get involved in radio the chance to learn about the industry.

“I celebrated 40 years working in radio last year and when this was being set up I wanted to put something back into society, and for something to be made for everyone to use.

“There are spaces both in front of the mic and behind the scenes for people to get involved.

“We are entirely volunteer led, so anyone who wants to help out should get in touch.

“It has cost £20,000 to get to this point, although we have been given funding from the Lottery and St Neots council.”

The station is only available on DAB radio, and can be found by pressing autoscan on a digital radio on Tuesday morning.
