Music: Home Town Rock ‘n’ Roll Band farewell charity gig
IT’S not only going to be a glum day for music lovers when the Home Town Rock ‘n’ Roll Band performs its farewell gig - but also for Peterborough charities.
The kind-hearted musicians - the current line up is Stuart Smith (guitar), Geoff Lovell (guitar), Jack Thomas (bass), Graham Seal (drums), Pete Glover (vocals) and Dave Cupit (vocals) - have raised somewhere in the region of £300,000 for charities over the years.
So by performing rousing renditions of classics by the likes of Elvis Presley, The Shadows and Buddy Holly, the Home Town Rock ‘n’ Roll Band has helped to provide vital funds to charities including the British Heart Foundation.
Guitarist Geoff Lovell, who has been with the band since 1988, said: “Sadly it’s time to call it a day. None of us are getting any younger!
“Recently we’ve been doing around eight shows a year and we’ve got 150 numbers in our catalogue that we choose from. We usually finish with Why Do Fools Fall in Love? It’s always a favourite.”
The band grew out of the late 70’s when Mick Lemmon (who sadly passed away in 2004) and Stuart played at the odd party or get together. They went by the name Sound 60s and played songs by The Shadows.
“I think it was a Silver Jubilee party in 1977 when they first played,” Geoff added.
This soon transformed to the Mick Lemmon Band in the early 1980s and Nick Smith (Stuart’s son) joined the fold.
For about three years in the mid nineties the band also included Marie Drury on vocals and DJ Ted Pool has been spinning discs from his amazing collection of 45s at Home Town shows since 2000. Other members have included Rex Gates and Mike Saunders.
The band has had a few homes including Stanground College, Perkins Sports Club and, most lately, The Parkway Sports & Social Club.
“The money raised is a bonus. We’ve had a ball playing music from an era we all love,” Geoff added. “We used to do a Christmas gig at the Werrington Sports Centre, that was always one to look forward to.”
Tickets for the gig at the Parkway Club in Bourges Boulevard on February 3 have sold out, but for any returns call 01733 561677.
