Film: Lemon Tree - A holy battle for a widow's lemon trees

Lemon Tree (15) Peterborough Arts Cinema, John Clare Theatre, Peterborough Central Library, Broadway, Thursday, 2 July

Lemon Tree (15) Peterborough Arts Cinema, John Clare Theatre, Peterborough Central Library, Broadway, Thursday, 2 JulyIsraeli writer-director Eran Riklis's film is most likely intended as a modern reworking of the Old Testament story of Ahab, the King of Israel, who covets the vineyard of his neighbour, Naboth the Jezreelite.

In this case, however, Ahab is Israel's defence minister. He has moved into a new house adjoining a lemon grove, a middle-aged Palestinian widow's only source of income, and insists that the trees be cut down for security reasons.

She fights back, engaging in a hopeless battle, though unlike Ahab's wife, Jezebel, the minister's wife sympathises with the handsome widow.

Tickets for the show cost 5 for non-members, and can be bought on the door of the cinema in the John Clare Theatre, at Peterborough Central Library, for 7.30pm.

Entry is free to members, or to those who purchased tickets for the postponed April 23 show.
