Cowboy and the farm girl

Cowboy and the farm girl

Cowboy and the farm girlFOLLOWING the success of Titanic - The Musical last year, the award-winning Peterborough Operatic and Dramatic Society are busy rehearsing for this year's production.

The society, known as PODS, will be performing Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! at the Key Theatre from March 17 until March 27.

Oklahoma! was the first collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein, paving the way for a string of musicals making them one of the most famous musical theatre creation teams in history.

Set in Oklahoma territory just after the turn of the century, it tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams.

A secondary romance concerns flirtatious Ado Annie Carnes and her long-suffering fianc Will Parker.

Rehearsals are well underway under the direction of Howard Carter.

This will be Howard's first production with PODS, but he has wealth of experience with other musical societies.

Julie Parry will again be taking the society through their paces as choreographer and Anthony Grunwell returns as the musical director.

Taking the lead as Laurey in her second season with PODS is Marianne Vivash. This will be Marianne's first principal role with the society.

Will Prideaux is playing the leading man Curly in his first production with PODS.

Fresh from their performances in Titanic last year, Glen Whitmore takes to the stage as Will Parker and Heather Knapp assumes the role of Ado Annie Carnes.

PODS formed in 1900 and its first production Iolanthe took place in the spring of 1901.

This year sees the society celebrates its 110th anniversary. A commemorative show will be staged later this year.
