Woodston: Poets enjoy a pint at the Palmerston

The Palmerston Arms pub took a step into the past as by holding an evening of story telling and poetry this week. The Palmerston Arms, in Oundle Road, Woodston, held the night on Monday, and more than a dozen people packed into the bar to enjoy a variety of performances from city poets.

The evening was made sweeter for the performing poets, as everyone who took to the stage was offered a free pint in return.

Former Peterborough Poet Laureate Mark Grist, who organised the event, said: "We were trying to bring back the old tradition of people sitting round in a pub and entertaining themselves with stories and poetry.

"It went really well – it was the second time we have done something here, and everyone at the Palmerston Arms has been really helpful and keen to promote the arts.

"And, of course, the offer of a free pint really helped get people on the stage."

The evening saw a number of people performing their own work, as well as reading poems from Shakespeare and Wordsworth.

It is now hoped that the event can be repeated at other pubs across the city.

Mr Grist said: "I definitely want to do something like this again – it is a simple and cheap idea, and it would be great to see it in some other pubs across the city.

"It is also great to see new performers, and this type of event can bring people on to the stage."
