Scheme to ease home energy bills

RESIDENTS in Dogsthorpe are being urged to change their lives to help the environment, thanks to a new scheme in the city centre.

RESIDENTS in Dogsthorpe are being urged to change their lives to help the environment, thanks to a new scheme in the city centre.Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) has launched the Warm Homes Peterborough project in partnership with Scottish Power Energy People Trust to help 1,500 people reduce their energy bills and live in a greener way.

The two-year project, which will focus on Dogsthorpe and Central wards and has already visited 20 homes in Dogsthorpe, helps people who rent their homes from Registered Social Landlords (RSs), including Cross Keys Homes and Axiom Housing and Accent Nene, to save money on their fuel bills.

Project officer Patrick McLintock has been visiting residents in their homes to provide advice and help on reducing the amount of energy being used.

He explained how simple changes, such as switching off lights in empty rooms, setting radiators to only heat rooms you use, and closing your curtains at dusk can help reduce the amount you pay for energy.

Patrick said: “It’s my job to help people find ways to reduce their bills and still keep their home warm. I am on hand to offer advice on issues such as heating, insulation, energy prices and energy-saving tips.

“I also give each home I visit a goody bag containing environmentally-friendly products.

“Most of us waste large amounts of energy in our homes. Every time you boil the kettle using more water than you need, you are adding to your energy bill needlessly. Not only does this make your bills more expensive, but it is also bad for the environment, releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

“Carbon dioxide is one of the harmful gasses contributing towards climate change, which is already having a devastating impact on the world.”

PECT is now calling for residents in Dogsthorpe who rent their home from Registered Social Landlords to come forward and help with the project.

Participating residents will receive a short visit from the project officer when a questionnaire will be completed. Participation is free, and each resident will be provided with a bag, worth 15, containing environmental goods such as energy saving lightbulbs, power-down plugs, save a flush units for toilets, and a reusable carrier bag.
