Clever tech for A6 Allroad

FOUR-level adaptive air suspension, up to 70kg less weight and 20 per cent more efficiency than before are the main selling points of the new Audi A6 Allroad quattro.
Some 6cm taller than the A6 on which it’s based, the four-wheel-drive-only A6 Allroad aims to continue the success of the old models, which were popular both for their more rugged styling and for their ability to handle more rugged terrain in confidence.
To begin with there are three engine choices. There is a 3.0-litre TFSI petrol with 306bhp and 325lb ft of torque, and then two V6 diesels.
The first has 201bhp and 332lb ft, with the second pumped up to 241bhp and 428lb ft. All three engines are mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which improves efficiency over a manual. The 201bhp diesel model is the most economical, recording 46.3mpg and 159g/km of CO2. The new Allroad is up to 70kg lighter than the old one, and widely-spaced gear ratios help keep revs low and fuel efficiency as high as possible.
Despite excellent engines, the stand-out feature that differentiates the Allroad from the A6 Avant is the four-level adaptive air suspension.
As well as automatically lowering the car by 15mm at higher speeds for increased fuel economy, the driver can raise the car up by 35mm to give extra clearance over awkward terrain. At particularly low speeds the suspension can be raised a further 10mm to make it possible to traverse really quite tricky ground.
As in the rest of the A6 range there’s plenty of technology. Internet access allows for real-time updates on traffic and route planning, as well as allowing passengers to surf the web or check emails.
A new parking camera system offers a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings, which can be displayed in a variety of ways on the main screen.
Order books will stay closed until next month, with deliveries scheduled for the spring. Prices will start from £43,145 on the road.
