Dogsthorpe residents tap into eco-friendly ideas

Greater Dogsthorpe residents have been saving water to make their lives greener, thanks to a new city centre project.

Greater Dogsthorpe residents have been saving water to make their lives greener, thanks to a new city centre project. The project, being run by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and Anglian Water in Greater Dogsthorpe, is known as Seeding Sustainable Communities, and was set up in April 2005 and originally worked in Hampton and Sugar Way, in Peterborough.

The project team is now working in Dogsthorpe and Welland to help local residents live in a more environmentally friendly way, which will also save them money.

Project officers visit people in their homes and provide practical help and advice about green living, particularly relating to reducing the amount of water used.

Each resident also receives a "green bag" full of eco products, such as save-a-flush units and eco-friendly washing- up liquid.

According to the Environment Agency, the energy used to heat water is responsible for about 23 per cent of an average home's carbon footprint. And energy use in homes accounts for more than a quarter of the UK's total carbon emissions.

It's estimated that installing just a few water-saving measures could save a typical household 225 per year on combinedwater and energy bills and drastically cut carbon dioxide emissions.

Project officer from PECT Karen Lawrence said, "Many of the people we've visited have already been doing fantastic eco-friendly things, but didn't realise how green they were.

"Our quick survey helps people understand how they could change their behaviour to become more sustainable and save on their bills."

Water efficiency manager at Anglian Water Linda Berkshire said: "Anglian Water is delighted to have supported PECT in this project.

"We hope that home owners have been inspired to change some of their water-using behaviours, such as reducing their showering time or not letting taps run unnecessarily, reducing costs and carbon, and helping to look after the environment."

PECT is keen to hear from people living in Greater Dogsthorpe who rent their home from Registered Social Landlords such as Cross Keys Homes, Axiom Housing or Accent Nene to come forward and help with the project.

Participating residents will receive a short visit from the project officer, when a questionnaire will be completed.

Participation is completely free, and each resident visited will be provided with a pack containing environmental products worth 15.

If you are part of a community group in Greater Dogsthorpe who would like the team to come to visit your group, you are asked to get in touch.
