Babies sign up for communication sessions

BEING a podgy pink bundle of fun seems to suit babies, but they can get frustrated with parents not knowing what they want.

BEING a podgy pink bundle of fun seems to suit babies, but they can get frustrated with parents not knowing what they want.A new class which aims to increase and improve communication between parents and their children has started in Parnwell.

Baby sign language aims to combat the problem of frustration by enabling children to communicate roughly a year before they can speak.

The First Signs classes are held at the Kingsgate Building, in Staplee way, on a weekly basis.

First Signs teacher Jackie Fewtrell said: “Things have gone very well. I’m extremely pleased with the class.

“There has been a fabulous response, and we’re now fully booked until January.

“We’ve had some great feedback. People loved doing the songs and enjoyed the interaction.

“It was the first time some of the children had come into contact with other babies in a large group setting.

“We sang a number of songs, and everyone got involved. the group was fantastic.

“The parents have gone home with songbooks to practise what we went through together.

“Signing enables children to start expressing themselves much sooner than they would purely through speech.

“Often a child knows what they want, but is unable to do so. Signing decreases the frustration for both babies and their parents.”
