IT'S here! The Key panto opened yesterday for a mammoth run of 57 performances that looks set to continue the theatre's tradition of staging a top family production.Mother Goose and the Demon Ringmaster follows the poor and ugly old lady of the title, who longs to be beautiful and wealthy.

The arrival of a goose that lays golden eggs on her doorstep solves the wealth part of the equation, but along comes the Demon Ringmaster to tempt her with the promise of beauty.

Michael Cross once again takes up the role of the pantomime dame, and Key Favourite Paul Crosby, who charmed audiences in The Full Monty.

The Key's precedent of taking a traditional story and giving it the theatre's inimitably modern twist

A blend of comedy, slapstick, music and good clean family fun will – as always – be essential ingredients of the show.

"Panto is so much about what the audience brings to it," Michael Cross said.

"To make somebody laugh is such a gift, especially at Christmas time, which let's face it can be stressful and even depressing for some people. That's the part of it all that makes it all worthwhile."

Michael has been performing in panto at the Key since 1993, and has become something of an institution for the city at Christmas time.

Lewis Hall at the Key said: "The cast have been rehearsing the panto at the same time as performing The Full Monty, which has made for a very busy few weeks, but it has all come together in true repertory style.

"We think this year's production will be one of the best yet."
