ONE of the top harmony groups of all time will perform at The Broadway Theatre tonight (Friday), when The Drifters take to the stage. With 55 years of hits and history behind them, The Drifters are one of the best-known vocal groups in the world.
Known for a raft of sing-along hits, including Saturday Night At The Movies, Come On Over To My Place and, of course, Under The Boardwalk, the original line-up of The Drifters formed in 1953 when Atlantic Records bigwig Ahmet Ertegun put together a line-up of musicians that lasted just a single session.
It was a precedent that would continue for decades, and The Drifters have undergone dozens upon dozens of changes and reincarnations.
Since their creation, the line-up of The Drifters has undergone many changes, including icons such as Clyde McPhatter, Ben E King, Charlie Thomas, Rudy Lewis and Johnny Moore.
As one of the biggest selling bands of all time, The Drifters have collated a huge catalogue of more than 50 hits, selling in excess of 214 million singles and 114 million albums across the world.
Tonight's show features The Drifters' classic material in the first half of the show, but it is also a special Christmas show with special guest Kellie Marie Schreiber.
The group's music continues to go from strength to strength with the release of a brand new album, entitled The Drifters: Five Decades and Moore, which was released in memory of the late great Johnny Moore, who died in 1998.
The line-up now includes Steve King, who lives in Peterborough.
