Review: Sunny Side Up - Paolo Nutini

(Atlantic) Paolo Nutini was barely out of his teens when his debut album These Streets was released back in 2006.Slowly, but surely, the album grew in popularity and the combination of his Latin looks and radio-friendly songs made him a star as his sales worldwide tipped over the two million mark.
Sounding a little like the kid brother of Wet Wet Wet, it was a slick, pleasant and enjoyable album, but not an essential listen.
More than two years later, his second album reveals he has grown into a mature artist and one to be reckoned with.
Commercially though, he may find that the number of old fans he loses will outnumber the new ones he wins.
Unlike so many singer/songwriters whose second albums are a pale rehash of their debuts, the Scottish troubadour has stretched his wings to impressive effect.
His voice has developed into a sweetly gruff instrument – less James Morrison, more Van Morrison – and he has expanded his musical boundaries to take in reggae, soul, folk, country blues and pop.
Opening track 10/10 is jaunty ska pop (Rico guests on trombone) complete with cheeky lyrics aimed at his lover.
Even better is the next track Coming Up Easy – a sublime and seductive R&B workout. And that's matched by the lovely Springsteen-esque stroll of Candy.
But my favourite track is the raw soul of No Other Way, which I could just imagine Otis Redding singing.
This is an album full of surprises, most of them nice ones, but perhaps the biggest shock is that he has turned his back on a winning formula. Hopefully, such a bold step will be rewarded.
