Readers' letters: Patrols needed to end bike menace - 29/08/2008

Would a Police Community Support Officer or a street warden please make use of their time and patrol the city's Crescent Bridge – I suggest between 8.15am and 8.45am and 5.30pm – to 6pm in order to help save pedestrians from nuisance cyclists?
Virtually daily, as I walk to and from work, I am passed at speed by a cyclist flouting the law. One side step and I would be on the pavement and they would be in the path of an oncoming car.
Remonstrate and you are met with abuse. Fines are the only solution.

It was a good idea to have David Beckham at the finale of the Beijing Olympic games. After all, what other world-famous Englishman is there?
But, instead of kicking one measly football to someone quite nearby, don't you think it would have been a real crowd-pleaser if the London bus had gone the whole way round the stadium, with Beckham firing off footballs every 100 metres or so?
That would have given them something to remember.
As for the inclusion of Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page: What was the point?
For all the money which was obviously thrown at the opening and closing ceremonies, there was nothing which had the wow factor.
I hope London can produce something more memorable than this.
In short: enjoyed the sports, was bored by the ceremonies.
And please London, don't give bunches of flowers to weightlifters, boxers, etctera.
