RE: Your Star Letter from Keith Steiner who tried to slag off haulier boss Mr Bernard Howard.
Mr Steiner would do well to remember that it's guys like Bernard Howard who keep quite a few thousand people in work in this country.

So instead of slagging the road haulage industry off, he should imagine collecting his goods from the railway station every time he needs something because most things go by road.

Recently we had a Truckfest at the Showground which employed about 200/300 people and if they didn't have that show the Heavy Horse Show, the BMF rallies and loads more functions would have to raise their entrance fees.

So you see trucks subsidise a lot more that Bernard Howard's bank balance.

As for "rogue" and "dangerous" lorries, the biggest offenders are not British but are from across the water.

School has had to deal with big issues

I write to express my disdain at your sensationalist banner headline "Sacked" in The ET on Thursday, July 17.

I will try to give your readers a wider view of what has taken place.

I have four children at St John Fisher School, and when my first child started there the amount of children achieving A to C grades at GCSE level was more than 40 per cent, well clear of the 30 per cent Government target.

This was achieved despite having to cope with more than its share of the social ills of the day – more than most other schools in the city. The results at GCSE level have gone down directly in line with the mass immigration to Peterborough. The St John Fisher School has had to cope with this sudden influx from abroad more than any other school in the city.

Some 60 per cent of St John Fisher School pupils have English as their second language. If you can't speak English how can you expect to pass GCSEs?

Your report said nothing about the years of service given by Mary Mihovilovic, who has been a strong and conscientious headmistress and my children and I are very grateful for her time at the school. It is very sad that her time at the school has ended in this way.

EDITOR'S NOTE: We respect your views but the fact is that the governors were removed from office and sacked is a fair word to describe that process. We have also carried a letter from the former chair of governors and will take every opportunity to report on the comments of all parties involved.
