AS DIRECTOR of policy and campaigns for the disabled motorists' charity Mobilise, I was very concerned to read about Peterborough City Council's plans to begin charging blue badge holders to park in its car parks.
Many disabled people have no choice but to use their cars because they either cannot get to a bus stop, or the buses are not accessible for them.
Disabled people usually take a much longer time to do their shopping, and by charging blue badge hold
ers to park, the council is penalising people for being disabled.
In the current climate of rapidly increasing motoring costs, this is merely an additional financial burden for the disabled motorist.
Mobilise is also very concerned about how the council aims to address the problem which disabled people with upper limb difficulties have using ticket machines.
Just because the machine is wheelchair accessible, and close by, does not mean a double arm amputee or someone with severe arthritis can use it.
Will they receive a parking ticket because they cannot use the machine?
Until disabled people can enjoy the same transport rights as non-disabled people, there will always be inequality and one way of helping to address this is to offer free parking.

Keep post office openPLEASE let common sense prevail and keep West Town post office open.
It serves more residents and businesses than others in the vicinity, is situated in a deprived urban area and does not close for lunch or half-days.
The post office is also the only one to have a bureau de change in the area, is the closest to the central post office in Cowgate which has an uncertain future and is best able to absorb additional business.
It has good disabled facilities, short-term parking close by and helps keep trade local in the area.
It appears to me that whoever proposed the closure of West Town post office cannot have addressed the complexity of the issues.
Hopefully they will take notice of the points raised by the locals and be able to make a more informed decision, coming to the sensible decision not to close West Town post office.
