On Friday, November 7, I am promoting the annual Soul Reunion at The Parkway Club in Peterborough.
The reunion, now in its 11th year, was in danger of folding this year, so I have agreed with others to keep it going.

This year, there is a special part of the night dedicated to two great local venues from the past.

The disco night at the Halcyon pub, in Atherstone Avenue, was, without doubt, the place to be on Thursday and Sunday nights, playing the very best in soul music. The venue pulled in people from around Peterborough just because it was "the place to be".

We are also paying a tribute to the A! Club at RAF Wittering. On both Wednesday and Saturday nights you could always see a good band or a great disco there. And all for just £1 entry.

On November 7, we are also featuring a live band called the Fantastics, who are one of the best Motown soul shows in the UK at the present time.

Along with legendary local DJs Steve Allen, Skip Stuart and Paul Donnelly – who were the best of their time – a great night is planned for all lovers of soul.

I am trying to collect any old photos or stories from anyone who has any memories from these venues, as I am trying to put together a memento CD/DVD for the evening.

I can be called on 01733 204353, or via e-mail at matt.page2@btinternet.com

Why should we care when all we see is mess?
Please look at the photograph I have sent in that I took at the end of last month, which is of an unkempt area close to my new front door.

Behind this door is my new kitchen and bathroom.

My wife and I are just two of more than 1,000 residents who have had these improvements made to rented social property in the last 18 months.

I, and my wife, are proud of our home and try our very best to look after it.

The photo is of an area within yards of my new front door.

Is it any wonder that people fail to look after their homes and the environment when our council leaves areas like this in such a mess?

This is just one area – there are many like this.

This, by the way, is in Eldern, Orton Malborne, Peterborough, known as a bad area.

But can you wonder at it when you see the weeds and shrubs in this photo?

In some places, they are more than 6ft tall.

If that was "within yards of my new front door" I'd deal with it myself. The council should be pressured, but people should do a bit themselves. Especially when its just a few minutes gardening.
