Readers' letters: 'Mindless noise' gives me splitting headache - 02/10/2008

I love going into the city centre with my mates, especially when I actually have money. But like the idea of bad singers or people playing loud and annoying instruments in the square, I don't think putting an opera singer in the middle of the city is going to get more people into town apart from the five per cent of the population that actually seem to like the singers or bands in the centre of town.
The other weekend, I was walking around town with my friends, as you do, and I got the biggest headache after standing in the square for about five minutes while some man behind started playing the bag pipes right near me. Now I appreciate that maybe he wants to earn some money or something, but does he have to really play the bagpipes? I know this sounds rude, but to me all bagpipes are is mindless noises.
I found myself later on that I had probably the worst headache I've ever had, and I walk out of Queensgate to find that he was standing outside playing the same tune as he was earlier. My point is that if you really need money that badly you're prepared to stand there for 75 per cent of your day trying to earn money, why don't you get a job for your Saturdays?
If you want to sing you should do it somewhere enclosed, and then if people want to hear you sing I'm sure they will come and find you. Therefore, I think that most of the singers in town should stop coming to the city centre and singing or playing their instrument I don't think that 80 per cent of the population that are in town actually appreciate this noise and it should just stop. If you are a good singer then by all means I have nothing against you, but if you're playing a very loud instrument or a very bad singer, please feel free to not play in our city centre... please.

MP doling out usual platitudes
Our MP states in his column that some people on the dole can afford to spend money at the betting office.
Dole money is very low, and I suspect that anyone who does this is almost certainly also working illegally.
When he accuses the Government of not honouring commitments to ghurkhas, he fails to say that under the Tories no ghurkhas at all were allowed the right to settle in this country.
The Government has honoured its only commitment, which was to allow ghurka ex-servicemen previously based in the UK, to settle here.
I believe that in previous columns he has argued against any extra immigrants being allowed in.
He changes opinions like the wind, for electoral advantage, I think.
An ex-banker from the city of London criticizing people on the dole is a bit rich. We are having to pay well over £100 billion to bail out bankers who have been living off fat bonuses for years.

Planners slow down the city
Please can someone explain to me why having taken a train journey to get from London King's Cross to Peterborough, which takes approximately 50 minutes, a distance of approximately 70 miles, it then takes me 35 minutes to travel from the station to Hampton and Yaxley by car?
Are the town planners crazy?
First they get London Road bridge complete, new traffic lights, new road system, and all working great.
